Listening to the classic AT40 shows, especially the VERY early ones, it's interesting to hear many of the non-countdown extras that were played. The one that really astonished me was the time "How High The Moon" by Les Paul and Mary Ford was played as the #1 song from twenty years ago. To me, hearing such a pre-rock-era tune in the mix was unusual.

One element I really liked about the early days of AT40 was how they played a song from the #1 album in the country when no song was currently in the Top 40 from that album. So we were able to hear some great album cuts that sometimes would be later released as singles and reach the Top 40.

Were those songs being played during commercial breaks as optional extras (likely for affiliates that didn't have news breaks) like the ones played during the Classic shows on Premiere (depending on which station you're listening on)?

They were actually included in the original program where Casey announces the song as being from the #1 album in the country.

Interesting that the early "AT40" shows did feature a lot of pre rock-era songs by artists such as Perry Como & Frankie Laine-Unfortunately,Premiere will edit them out of the terrestrial broadcasts-Your best bet is to wait until those shows air on XM.

Anyone else remember a show sometime in the late 70s when the jazz classic "Take Five" by the Dave Brubeck Quartet was played as an extra? I recall Casey saying it was the only piece of music in 5/4 time to hit the 40. Heard it played today on an adult standards station and it brought back the memory. A very cool record BTW!
