Upon knowing that Billboard had a multi-star system in the early '80's that resulted in frequent odd chart occurences for a number of songs, I thought I'd compare the surveys of both Billboard and Cash Box featuring 9/4/1982 (the AT40 show played OTA last weekend). I used a method to determine the rankings of the songs on both charts combined. Example: If a song placed #1 on both charts, it gets two points, if a song placed #1 on one chart and #2 on another, it gets three points and so on. Anyway, here's all the songs on Billboard's Top 40 combined with Cash Box's rankings:
“Abracadabra” - Steve Miller Band (#1/#1) - 2 points “Eye Of The Tiger” - Survivor (#2/#2) - 4 points “Hard To Say I’m Sorry” - Chicago (#3/#3) - 6 points “Hold Me” - Fleetwood Mac (#4/#5) - 9 points “You Should Hear How She Talks About You” - Melissa Manchester (#6/#4) - 10 points “Vacation” - The Go-Go’s (#8/#7) - 15 points “Take It Away” - Paul McCartney (#10/#6) - 16 points “Hurts So Good” - John Cougar (Mellencamp) (#7/#10) - 17 points “Wasted On The Way” - Crosby, Stills & Nash (#9/#8) - 17 points “Jack And Diane” - John Cougar (Mellencamp) (#11/#9) - 20 points “Love Is In Control (Finger On The Trigger)” - Donna Summer (#12/#11) - 23 points “Even The Nights Are Better” - Air Supply (#5/#19) - 24 points “Love Will Turn You Around” - Kenny Rogers (#13/#12) - 25 points “Eye In The Sky” - Alan Parsons Project (#14/#13) - 27 points “American Music” - The Pointer Sisters (#16/#15) - 31 points “Who Can It Be Now?” - Men At Work (#15/#17) - 32 points “Blue Eyes” - Elton John (#23/#14) - 37 points “Think I’m In Love” - Eddie Money (#17/#21) - 38 points “Somebody’s Baby” - Jackson Browne (#24/#16) - 40 points “Only Time Will Tell” - Asia (#21/#20) - 41 points “Only The Lonely” - The Motels (#19/#23) - 42 points “You Can Do Magic” - America (#20/#22) - 42 points “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near)” - Michael McDonald (#28/#18) - 46 points “Kids In America” - Kim Wilde (#25/#24) - 49 points “Hot In The City” - Billy Idol - (#26/#27) - 53 points “Rosanna” - Toto (#29/#25) - 54 points “Let Me Tickle Your Fancy” - Jermaine Jackson (#27/#30) - 57 points “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” - Jennifer Holliday (#22/#40) - 62 points “Hold On” - Santana (#30/#33) - 63 points “Never Been In Love” - Randy Meisner (#35/#28) - 63 points “Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)” - Joan Jett & The Blackhearts (#32/#32) - 64 points “Someday, Someway” - Marshall Crenshaw (#36/#31) - 67 points “What’s Forever For” - Michael Murphy (#31/#36) - 67 points “I Ran (So Far Away)” - A Flock Of Seagulls (#37/#34) - 71 points “Gloria” - Laura Branigan (#39/#42) - 81 points “Love Or Let Me Be Lonely” - Paul Davis (#40/#41) - 81 points “Keep The Fire Burnin’” - REO Speedwagon (#18/#64) - 82 points “Out Of Work” - Gary U.S. Bonds (#33/#59) - 92 points “Let Me Go” - Ray Parker Jr. (#38/#71) - 109 points “Valley Girl” - Frank & Moon Zappa (#34/#82) - 116 points
In summary, the top three songs on both charts were the same, Fleetwood Mac remains at #4 and Melissa Manchester would be #5 here. This chart is a bit incomplete because these songs were on Cash Box's Top 40 but I don't know where Billboard had these songs placed:
“Make Believe” - Toto (#26 in Cash Box) “Tainted Love” - Soft Cell (#29) “Themes From E.T. (The Extra-Terrestrial)” - Walter Murphy (#35) “Voyeur” - Kim Carnes (#37) “Don’t You Want Me” - The Human League (#38) “I’m The One” - Roberta Flack (#39)
What do you think?

(The Extra-Terrestrial)” - Walter Murphy (#48/#35) - 83 points
On this chart three Top 40 songs on Billboard - "Out of Work", "Let Me Go" and "Valley Girl" would not have made this list. I had to break ties by seeing which songs moved up and down the chart but I'm not sure about #32-#34. Marshall Crenshaw did not move on either chart, Michael Murphey moved up 4 spots on Billboard and 3 on Cash Box (7 combined) and Toto's "Make Believe" climbed 6 spots on Cash Box (I would think that song would have been up at least two on Billboard). I also think Roberta Flack was at least climbing on Billboard that week (she was up five on Cash Box) as REO Speedwagon took a big nosedive. Well, what does everyone think?

A few weeks ago, I compared the Billboard and Cash Box charts for 9/4/1982. Well, with Premiere airing the 9/17/1983 episode of American Top 40, I'd like to bring back the comparisons:
“Maniac” - Michael Sembello (#1/#5) - 6 points “The Safety Dance” - Men Without Hats (#3/#3) - 6 points “Every Breath You Take” - Police (#6/#2) - 8 points “Tell Her About It” - Billy Joel (#2/#6) - 8 points “Puttin’ On The Ritz” - Taco (#8/#1) - 9 points “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of These)” - Eurythmics (#5/#4) - 9 points “Total Eclipse Of The Heart” - Bonnie Tyler (#4/#7) - 11 points “Human Nature” - Michael Jackson (#7/#11) - 18 points “Don’t Cry” - Asia (#10/#9) - 19 points “She Works Hard For The Money” - Donna Summer (#11/#8) - 19 points “(She’s) Sexy + 17” - The Stray Cats (#12/#10) - 22 points “Making Love Out Of Nothing At All” - Air Supply (#9/#15) - 24 points “Lawyers In Love” - Jackson Browne (#13/#13) - 26 points “I’ll Tumble 4 Ya” - Culture Club (#18/#12) - 30 points “Far From Over” - Frank Stallone (#14/#17) - 31 points “Promises Promises” - Naked Eyes (#15/#16) - 31 points “King Of Pain” - Police (#16/#19) - 35 points “True” - Spandau Ballet (#17/#20) - 37 points “China Girl” - David Bowie (#24/#14) - 38 points “Dead Giveaway” - Shalamar (#23/#18) - 41 points “How Am I Supposed To Live Without You” - Laura Branigan (#19/#23) - 42 points “Human Touch” - Rick Springfield (#21/#24) - 45 points “(Keep Feeling) Fascination” - Human League (#20/#25) - 45 points “It’s A Mistake” - Men At Work (#22/#26) - 48 points “Don’t You Get So Mad” - Jeffrey Osborne (#25/#28) - 53 points “Islands In The Stream” - Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton (#26/#27) - 53 points “Stand Back” - Stevie Nicks (#35/#21) - 56 points “Kiss The Bride” - Elton John (#27/#31) - 58 points “Telephone (Long Distance Love Affair)” - Sheena Easton (#30/#33) - 63 points “Tell Her No” - Juice Newton (#31/#32) - 63 points “Tonight I Celebrate My Love” - Peabo Bryson & Roberta Flack (#34/#29) - 63 points “One Thing Leads To Another” - The Fixx (#29/#35) - 64 points “Burning Down The House” - Talking Heads (#28/#37) - 65 points “Big Log” - Robert Plant (#32/#36) - 68 points “Lady Love Me (One More Time)” - George Benson (#33/#39) - 72 points “Delirious” - Prince (#37/#41) - 78 points “Don’t Forget To Dance” - The Kinks (#36/#43) - 79 points “It Must Be Love” - Madness (#38/#45) - 83 points “Suddenly Last Summer” - The Motels (#40/#46) - 86 points “Sitting At The Wheel” - The Moody Blues (#39/#48) - 87 points
"Maniac" was #1 on Billboard, Taco #1 on Cash Box but right now the combined chart positions have "Maniac" tied atop with "The Safety Dance". As usual, my list is incomplete due to five songs ranked in the Top 40 on Cash Box but not Billboard:
“Flashdance…What A Feeling” - Irene Cara (#22) “Rock Of Ages” - Def Leppard (#30) “Is There Something I Should Know” - Duran Duran (#34) “Hold Me ‘Til The Mornin’ Comes” - Paul Anka (#38) “Cold Blooded” - Rick James (#40)
All of these songs - except for Rick James - were dropping from Billboard. Any help on Billboard rankings for the five songs listed is of course appreciated.

1. “The Safety Dance” - Men Without Hats (#3/#3) - 6 points 2. “Maniac” - Michael Sembello (#1/#5) - 6 points 3. “Tell Her About It” - Billy Joel (#6/#2) - 8 points 4. “Every Breath You Take” - Police (#6/#2) - 8 points 5. “Puttin’ On The Ritz” - Taco (#8/#1) - 9 points 6. “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of These)” - Eurythmics (#5/#4) - 9 points 7. “Total Eclipse Of The Heart” - Bonnie Tyler (#4/#7) - 11 points 8. “Human Nature” - Michael Jackson (#7/#11) - 18 points 9. “Don’t Cry” - Asia (#10/#9) - 19 points 10. “She Works Hard For The Money” - Donna Summer (#11/#8) - 19 points 11. “(She’s) Sexy + 17” - The Stray Cats (#12/#10) - 22 points 12. “Making Love Out Of Nothing At All” - Air Supply (#9/#15) - 24 points 13. “Lawyers In Love” - Jackson Browne (#13/#13) - 26 points 14. “I’ll Tumble 4 Ya” - Culture Club (#18/#12) - 30 points 15. “Far From Over” - Frank Stallone (#14/#17) - 31 points 16. “Promises Promises” - Naked Eyes (#15/#16) - 31 points 17. “King Of Pain” - Police (#16/#19) - 35 points 18. “True” - Spandau Ballet (#17/#20) - 37 points 19. “China Girl” - David Bowie (#24/#14) - 38 points 20. “Dead Giveaway” - Shalamar (#23/#18) - 41 points 21. “How Am I Supposed To Live Without You” - Laura Branigan (#19/#23) - 42 points 22. “Human Touch” - Rick Springfield (#21/#24) - 45 points 23. “(Keep Feeling) Fascination” - Human League (#20/#25) - 45 points 24. “It’s A Mistake” - Men At Work (#22/#26) - 48 points 25. “Islands In The Stream” - Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton (#26/#27) - 53 points 26. “Don’t You Get So Mad” - Jeffrey Osborne (#25/#28) - 53 points 27. “Stand Back” - Stevie Nicks (#35/#21) - 56 points 28. “Kiss The Bride” - Elton John (#27/#31) - 58 points 29. “Telephone (Long Distance Love Affair)” - Sheena Easton (#30/#33) - 63 points 30. “Tonight I Celebrate My Love” - Peabo Bryson & Roberta Flack (#34/#29) - 63 points 31. “Tell Her No” - Juice Newton (#31/#32) - 63 points 32. “One Thing Leads To Another” - The Fixx (#29/#35) - 64 points 33. “Burning Down The House” - Talking Heads (#28/#37) - 65 points 34. “Big Log” - Robert Plant (#32/#36) - 68 points 35. “Lady Love Me (One More Time)” - George Benson (#33/#39) - 72 points 36. “Delirious” - Prince (#37/#41) - 78 points 37. “Don’t Forget To Dance” - The Kinks (#36/#43) - 79 points 38. “Cold Blooded” - Rick James (#41/#40) - 81 points 39. “It Must Be Love” - Madness (#38/#45) - 83 points 40. “You're Driving Me Out Of My Mind" - Little River Band (#42/#42) - 84 points
I moved up Rick James and got rid of the Moody Blues. Ties were broken based on a combined chart movement but in the cases of Frank Stallone/Naked Eyes and Juice Newton/Peabo-Roberta, I broke their ties based on next week's chart movements. I actually awarded a tiebreaker to Sly's brother. Ugh! And "The Safety Dance" actually broke the #1 tiebreaker (it moved up two on Cash Box while "Maniac" moved down two on the same chart; no such movement on Billboard).
Clarification: "You're Driving Me Out Of My Mind" by the Little River Band is now on the chart even though it was not in either Billboard or Cash Box's Top 40 for the week. The Little River Band did place 42 in both polls for a combined point total of 84 which was good enough to knock the Motels (40/46 = 86) off the rankings. The rankings are now final. Thanks freakyflybry.
