This one is for all you die hard chart watchers:Mariah Carey has just racked up her 18th #1 single on Billboard's Hot 100 Song Chart with "Touch My Body"-Up until three years ago,Mariah & Elvis Presley were tied with 17 #1 hits apiece-Mariah's new CD "E=Mc2" is due to be released on April 15th-According to Billboard charts editor Geoff Mayfield:"Based on the reception for this song,if the new album is near the quality of Mariah's last one,she could go all the way"-Mayfield also pointed out that Carey will "never replace the Beatles or Elvis in stature-There's no denying the fan base she has, which is one of the most avid I've ever witnessed. And for anyone to remain relevant this many years after their first album is an amazing achievement".

I congratulate Mariah for all her success and wish her well, but let's be honest---does the Billboard Hot 100 mean anything now? No one completely knows how it works and no countdown show has used it since 1991. Since the people at Billboard screwed up this chart in the 1990s the Hot 100 has become completely irrelevent.

I agree. Billboard waited waaayyy too long to make any improvements to the chart once the single format started to decline in the '90's. They also keep changing the formula they use regarding the ratio of airplay-to-sales. No countdown show would touch this chart with a ten foot pole. It is truly a testament to Mariah Carey that just a few years after her former label paid her over $20 million NOT to record for them that she is still doing phenomenally well. But will she ever be held in the same regard as Elvis or The Beatles? Nuh-uh.
