wow...another original Jacksonvillian, one more and we can become the AT40 Message Board version of the 4 Horsemen. Hehe... well, I never actually lived in Jacksonville (although my sister does now). But did grow up mostly around Gainesville (except for six years elsewhere in Florida), so my first taste of Top 40 radio on FM was out of Jax (WAIV and Y-103). Incidentally, my curiosity sent me searching the web, where I found Smokin' Joe did a brief stint at WFLZ in Tampa (while they were an oldies station), which led me to an amazing site dedicated to the history of that station (and how it brought the legendary Q105 crashing to the ground). Airchecks galore: www.thepowerpig.com/

My favorite one hit wonder is a song that probably none of you even remember(but I could be wrong): Love You Like I Never Loved Before-John O'Bannion. Peaked at #24 on AT40 in April-May 1981. I definitely remember that song, and loved it (I think I still have an old tape from when I recorded it off a Jacksonville radio station back then... The Wave, maybe? Pretty sure there was a "V" in the call letters). Same tape, I've also got another favorite and forgotten One-Hit Wonder: "Just So Lonely" by Get Wet. ETA: Did a search, and it was WAIV that I taped those from... man, hearing the voice of Smokin' Joe Hager again just washed a huge wave of nostalgia over me.

The shortened version of "Thriller" (which edited out Vincent Price, along with much of the intro music) was the 45 rpm single version.

I'm ashamed that my current favorite radio station was responsible for making that song a hit. (Actually, I don't loathe the song as much as I used to... the spoken word bit in the bridge still makes me gag though.) Hey, you know what paradise is? It's a lie, a fantasy we create about people and places as we'd like them to be But you know what truth is? It's that little baby you're holding, it's that man you fought with this morning The same one you're going to make love with tonight That's truth, that's love...... *gag*

Should I mention the worst song on this show? I won't give you the title but I will spell out the artist's first name -- C-h-a-r-l-e-n-e. (I'm still learning this web site. If I knew how, I'd place a YUK! face here!) I'm ashamed that my current favorite radio station was responsible for making that song a hit. (Actually, I don't loathe the song as much as I used to... the spoken word bit in the bridge still makes me gag though.)

Also, 1979 I missed a most of the shows because of a self-imposed ban on AT40 for one year. A self-imposed ban on AT40?? What are you, some kind of masochist?!

Gotta go with 1978, 'cause that's when I first discovered AT40. Also, that's around the time I really started listening to pop radio on a regular basis, so I like most of the songs from that year.

At some point in 1971 (From what I have heard, it was the first weekly countdown of May), AT40 began counting down on the basis of the week the show was aired. Yep, it was the weekend of May 8, 1971 (the previous week AT40 aired its first ever non-year-end special).

Dang, I didn't realize it was available through amazon.com (it wasn't when I first checked a few months back). Now I can buy it without having to "borrow" my roommate's credit card!

Yep, the 10/7/78 show was the first to use the new hour-ending music. The minor-key organ theme was still in place on the 9/30/78 show.

And on a related note (since I'm curious now), when (in the mid to late '90s) did he start and then stop giving the fax number for submitting R&Ds?

I'm not sure exactly when it started, but back when CT40 was still distributed on vinyl, CBH was sent out as a separate record (you used to be able to find them on eBay sometimes). That's likely why CBH doesn't appear on most of the early shows in trade circulation.

Where did you live that you could hear it? Were you in Palatka then? I can't imagine the signal carried to Clearwater from there! I lived in the Gainesville/Ocala area from 1987 to 1994 (aside from one year in Atlanta), so I got to hear the many formats of 99.9 (from Top 40 I-100 to a shortlived Rock 40 format to Rhythmic and finally Hot AC-leaning before I moved to Tampa Bay).
