In that AT40 debut, Casey led into “Lay Down (Candles In the Rain)” by telling a story about how Melanie used some spare time on a European tour to appear on a TV show in the Netherlands, and she created such a sensation that it was estimated that half of all Dutch households bought one or more of her records.
If that seems exaggerated, well, maybe it was; in late 1971 when “Brand New Key” was a hit Casey repeated that story, expressing some skepticism about it but saying “it’s a good story, so we’ll tell it anyway.”
