On a Casey's biggest hits track, he said this. The first big hit for Wham was "Wake Me Before You Go-Go" which seemed to indicate that the duo of George Michael and Andrew Ridgely was on the rise. But the duo's followup indicated something that was very different. Even though it was credited in the United States to Wham, it was actually a solo hit for George Michael, which was how it was credited when it was released in England. The first inkling that Wham was no more. And George Michael would be a major star all by himself. Here's "Careless Whisper".
So what other hits were credited to a duo or group that were in actuality by a solo artist? The most obvious example is "Someday We'll Be Together" which was credited to Diana Ross & the Supremes but was really a Diana solo record. Others...

"Break It Down Again" was released after Curt Smith left Tears for Fears and Roland Orzabal was the only member.
Paul McCartney was the only Beatle on "Yesterday".

Unchained Melody and Ebb Tide.
I think Sonny may have just stood and watched on one or two as well. 1965 was a big year for this.

Yeah, I always got a kick out of that male 'Supreme' background voice in that song. Then-Motown songwriter Johnny Bristol, who co-wrote the song, is the voice. No Mary, no Cindy.

Two songs that were #1 in the '80s, from movies, and written and produced by Giorgio Moroder:
"Call Me," from American Gigolo, credited to Blondie, but actually has Deborah Harry's vocals backed by studio musicians "Take My Breath Away," from Top Gun, credited to Berlin, but actually has Terri Nunn's vocals backed by studio musicians

The Waters sisters, Julia and Maxine, provided the female backing vocals.

"Beth" was credited to Kiss, but drummer Peter Criss sang lead and was the only band member in the studio.

I know it missed the top 40 reaches in 1985, but did the 1985 song by EL DEBARGE with DEBARGE called "You Wear It Well" count?

The song was credited to ASIA, but only singer John Wetton appeared on the recording.

On their breakthrough hit "Shine" only Collective Soul was Ed Roland. I just heard a Casey's Biggest hits track about the artist in the previous post, Gregg Alexander or New Radicals.
