When the AT40 year end countdowns from 1983-1991 and 1993 were full 8 hours long: Did many AT40 affilates at that time opt to air only the last 4 hours due to time constrants on their radio lineup if they desire rather than the full 8 hours? I know WLS AM 890 aired the AT40 1983, 1984, 1985, and 1986 year enders in 8 hours full, WYTZ Z-95 Chicago aired the AT40 1987, 1988, 1989, and 1990 year enders in 8 hours full, WBBM B-96 Chicago aired the AT40 1991 year ender in 8 hours full, but WXLC Hot 102.3 Waukegan, Illinois carried the 1993 AT40 year ender for only the last 4 hours of the show starting with hour #5 and the #49 song for the year.
I guess some AT40 stations aired the full 8 hours of the AT40 year enders on New Years Eve or New Years Day for special New Years marathon programming or something like that.

Not sure about the others, other than I hope they were aired in their entirety, whether it was split up or not. My local station aired all eight hours consecutively, beginning at the same time when the regular weekly show would have aired, and just run four hours extra into whatever slot was there. This was through 1990, anyway, as I moved to a different state in 1991 and started hearing a lot more of Casey Kasem and Rick Dees and much less of Shadoe.

I'm not sure the radio landscape was filled with as many syndicated shows as it is today, plus many stations were still manned and not as automated as they are today, which would have given stations the leeway to program an 8 hour special in a slot normally occupied by a 4 hour show.

I can explain what happened in the SF Bay Area. 1983 - 1985, station aired all 8 hours beginning at the regular time slot. 1986, the show began at 4:00 am and finished at its regular time. By the end of 1986 the station had changed to modern rock and dumped AT40 in the spring of 1987. There were no other top 40 stations in the area, so that was the end of original run AT40 in the Bay area as far as I know.
In 1978, the station aired all 8 hours of the year-ender on Christmas eve and skipped the show the following week. 1981 and 1982, all 8 hours were run on New Years eve beginning at 4:00 pm, in addition to the split shows running in AT40's usual time slot.

Do we know why 1992 was a two part show? I feel like by the time the 90s came around, there was more programming available so might have been harder to clear an 8 hour show. Which is probably why CT40 and WT40 always did two parts. What was strange is they went back to 8 hours in 1993.
Also, I thought WT40 two parts was terrible. If I remember, they would only do the top # based on the year, 88 or 1988, for example. Then they would skip playing quite a few songs so the second part only have 40 songs. What does Rick do today for year end? Top 40 only?

In Newfoundland, where I live, OZ-FM did air the full eight-hour year-end countdowns every time they occurred. I am thinking that they had to fill the schedule with something since some DJs were on Christmas vacation, or the radio station saw it as cheaper than paying a DJ his/her wages for an extra four hours whenever the eight-hour year-ender aired.
To sum it up, radio stations acquire syndicated radio shows because it is much cheaper than having to pay a DJ. HITS-FM aired Backtrax USA many years ago (they replaced it with AT40 in 2009), as well as Rick Dees' Weekly Top 40 (which is now aired on OZ-FM).

Which is probably why CT40 and WT40 always did two parts. Another reason for those two shows breaking up the year-end countdown into two parts was by necessity. They were based on the R&R charts, and R&R always skipped two weeks for the holidays (there would be one week with no issue published at all, and another week with an abbreviated issue that had news but no charts). |

Z-102 in Savannah, GA always aired the Top 100. They didn't air Part One of the Top 100 of 1982 until New Year's Day 1983 on which they aired the full Top 100. They aired the Top 100 of 1983 on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. They aired the Top 40 Beatles songs on the last Sunday of 1984, then aired the Top 100 of 1984 on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. They aired the Top 100 of 1985 on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day then aired the Top 50 on the first Sunday of January 1986. They did the same thing for 1986 and 1987. They aired the Top 100 of 1988 in a triple play on New Year's Eve, New Year's Day and Jan. 2. They aired the Top 100 of 1989 on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. In 1990, they aired songs 100-50 Sunday morning Dec. 30 '90 then aired songs 49-1 that Sunday evening. Ironically, #50 was "Can't Stop" by After 7. They did the same thing in 1991, then aired the full Top 100 of 1991 on New Year's Day. I don't know what they did on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day because I was in Orlando at the time. I listened to both parts of the Top 100 of 1992 on XL-106.7 then listened to Part 2 again on Z-102.
