Does anyone know why the show went from 6 segments per hour to 4 (and 5 for the 4th hour) when Shadoe started hosting? Really the changing landscape of radio, which I felt AT40 "led the charge" in that aspect. Commercial breaks were longer, but fewer. Six segments per hour go all the way back to 1972, at least for AT40. When AT40 first aired, there were as many as NINE (or ten, as in the debut show). Nowadays, there are 3-4 segments per hour in the countdown shows I listen to (CT40, AT40, CT30, W22, WT20). ACC would also follow suit in 1993, going from six segments to four. I believe it's a way to keep the listener more engaged, and less likely to channel surf (or turn the radio off altogether). Notice how all the 70s and 80s shows are in three segments per hour in the Premiere series* (when all of them originally had at least six)? Can you imagine having six commercial breaks per hour today (or more)? Much shorter attention spans these days, and radio is trying to minimize the impact of turning off the station. My thoughts, anyway. * optional extra segments not included, as not all stations air them (thus why they're OPTIONAL)
