There is a video on YouTube whose title is the title of this thread that includes about a minute long mention of AT40's inception. It's around the 16 minute mark. At the end of the video is the mention of an unannounced visit by Elvis to then President Nixon in the White House. You can type simply 'Timeline 1970' to find the video.

Memories for me from 1970: 1st Earth Day, and 18 year olds being able to vote. What a year for the Jackson 5, having 4 number 1 records. Diana Ross going solo, leaving the most successful American group. Speaking of groups--the Beatles breaking up. Interesting that on its way down the chart for the first AT40 ever was the Long and Winding Road. Sadness as well losing Janis Joplin and Jimmy Hendrix.
I know many on our board here were very young or maybe not even born in 1970, but I was happy to hear AT40.
Thanks for posting this and I sure will look at the video on You Tube.

In December 1970, the long anticipated novel-turned-movie Love Story was released to multitudes of theatre-goers, grossing millions in box office receipts. And its success rippled to the music industry. For four weeks in early 1971, three ‘theme’ singles originating from the movie’s score were simultaneously ranked among Billboard’s Top 40. And 53 years later, now comes word that one of the movie’s main characters (Ryan O’Neal, as ‘preppy’ Oliver Barrett) has passed away. www.aol.com/lifestyle/ryan-oneal-academy-award-nominated-220740936.html
