If the action on this flip side was strong enough to cause a record to go from #34 to #8 in one week, why wasn't it listed on the chart simply as Free Wheelin' that week? The record was toast, according to the chart.

If the action on this flip side was strong enough to cause a record to go from #34 to #8 in one week, why wasn't it listed on the chart simply as Free Wheelin' that week? The record was toast, according to the chart. I have no idea; Billboard that week (11/30/74) just listed "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet", and the following week referred to both sides, with YASNY still as the A and "Free Wheelin'" as the B. The record's movement, after hitting #1 on 11/9/74, was 1-12-34-8-8-12-23-out of the top 40 (the last week, at #23, AT40 did the first half of the year end countdown). I think this may just be an example of the weird and often implausible chart movement of the time, which included a lot of sharp jumps and drops, if not a flat-out error. I don't think "Free Wheelin'" suddenly got THAT much play on the top 40 stations, and consumers who wanted it were probably more likely to buy the album ("Not Fragile", a former #1 album that remained in the top 5 during the single's sudden resurgence.)

According to Billboard, the song's airplay was increasing in the Northeast during the period in question.
My cousin, who was in the Army, told me when he heard "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" on AT40 that the song was popular off base.
The song was probably 1974's version of “Pour Some Sugar on Me”.

Checking all the other major trades at the time, none of them have BTO making a jump back up the chart, after reaching #1. In addition, Record World was pretty well known for listing B-sides that got some airplay/sales activity and they never listed it. Hmmm??!!

"Free Wheelin'" was an instrumental written by Blair Thornton as a tribute to Duane Allman.
By the way BTO is back! Featuring Randy Bachman and Fred Turner, the Back In Overdrive tour is scheduled to begin in the US during August.

Wish Premiere on a late 1974 AT40: The 70's offered "Free Wheelin'" as an OPTIONAL EXTRA.
