How often, if at all, has a remake of a Billboard Top 40 hit either preceded or followed in the countdown another song by the original artist of the remake? I thought of this when hearing/seeing Light Sings by the Fifth Dimension preceding Puppet Man by Tom Jones at #39 and #38 in Cash Box in May 1971.

Love this question, and I'm amazed at how fast I found another example, from the same month and year at that: May 15, 1971: #20--"Another Day", Paul McCartney; #21: "We Can Work It Out", Stevie Wonder. Just for laughs, I checked "Puppet Man" and "Light Sings". On 'Billboard' they never got near each other on the 'Hot 100'.

One interesting note about Light Sings (5th Dimension) and Puppet Man (Tom Jones), those two songs were back to back on the Record World M.O.R. chart dated May 29, 1971. They were a little further apart on the Top 100 singles chart that week--#43 and #49, respectively.

In both 1974 and 1978 there were also Paul McCartney/Wings songs and Beatles remakes originally sung by Paul on the 40 near each other, but not consecutive: June 29, 1974 has "Band On the Run" at #8 and Anne Murray's "You Won't See Me" at #12, while on August 12, 1978 we have "I've Had Enough" at #25 and EW&F's "Got To Get You Into My Life" at #29.

On 11/3/1990, The original Righteous Brothers 'Unchained Melody' and the remake (also credited to the Righteous Brothers) were at #'s 19 and 17, which I think is as close as they got to being back-to-back within the countdown.

On the 3/6/71 chart, Ike & Tina Turner are at #12 with "Proud Mary", originally performed by Creedence Clearwater Revival... who happen to be at #11 with "Have You Ever Seen The Rain".
On the 3/13/71 chart, "Proud Mary" jumped up to #7 while CCR moved to #8, meaning Ike & Tina Turner's remake of the CCR classic and CCR's new song were back to back for two weeks.

Superstar - Temptations Now THIS would make a great trivia question. What Top 40 hit had this occurrence happen twice? And the OA was at #30 both times!

I just noticed an example of this in August 1968, with Jose Feliciano and the Doors.
