One of the biggest "Dig It" songs, maybe the biggest after M, ABBA, and Hayes (from an AT/CT 40 focus), would be "Sex And Candy" from Marcy Playground in 1998 (number 3 on AT, number 8 Billboard).

Then there's Be Thankful For What You Got by William DeVaughn. You know, for a message song about being thankful for what we have, William sure did repeat many times what we don't have. Was this supposed to make us feel better? Or was the message being sarcastic? Diamond in the back, sunroof top, diggin the scene with a gangsta lean repeat repeat repeat etc.

While the phrase doesn't appear in the record (which is basically an instrumental), Casey introduced "I Likes to Do It" by People's Choice on 9/11/71 by telling a story about how the band played at Fort Dix in New Jersey when some record producers were present, and "it was very obvious how much the GI's and their dates were digging the music" when they played that number. The band were then signed on the spot.

Here’s an entry for the holiday version of this thread… Santa Claus and His Old Lady… It peaked at number 4 on the Billboard Christmas Singles chart upon its release in 1971, then peaked again at number 3 on the same chart in 1972 and 1973. Tommy Chong could really dig the story Cheech was telling… “Yeah, man. I can dig that. Like, uh, what are ya doin', man?”… later in the song (spoken story that is)… “Yeah, I can dig that, man, 'cause that's a dangerous bit, man!” Interestingly, the B-side of this was the famous “Dave” routine…

There's also one honorable mention "dig" song that never made AT40 but peaked at #91 in late 1979: "I Dig The Rock" by British born actor Tim Curry, best known for his role in the cult classic "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and later supplied voices in Saturday morning cartoons like "Peter Pan and the Pirates", "Sonic the Hedgehog Sat AM", and "The Wild Thornberrys".

So not "Dig It" but Ratt hit the top 40 with "Round and Round" and used the word "Dig" in the same manner as "Dig It".

It only made it to #50, but Bridget the Midget had a fan in the crowd hollering “I dig, I really dig it!” They told him to sit down, that he couldn’t come on the stage and he replied “But I dig it!!”… poor guy, he was just digging the Queen of the Blues. Not sure how he felt about Freddie Feelgood and his funky little five piece band. Which song are you referencing? "Bridget the Midget (The Queen of the Blues)," by Ray Stevens, from his album "Boogity Boogity" (famous, of course, for "The Streak") youtu.be/IFNaPIW6QxIdL

Thanks for posting that video Dale. After watching it, I’m now wondering… do we need to start another thread with songs that have “sock it to me” in the lyrics. “Bridget the Midget” does, “Respect” may be the most famous… and a google search came up with a song called “ Sock it to Me” that I knew nothing about. I now know that it peaked at #12 in 1997. I don’t really know anything about Missy Elliot. Oh well… :-)
”Troglodyte” has “I’ll sock it ya Daddy” in the lyrics…

Two other 'famous' ones, both #1s: "Harper Valley P.T.A."--Jeannie C. Riley, 1968; and "One Bad Apple"--The Osmonds, 1971.

One song with a plethora of 'Sock it to mes' in the lyric just played on this week's Sirius-XM '60s Satellite Survey' Wednesday replay. From summer 1969, the Isley Brothers' "I Turned You On", at it's peak position #23. According to host Dave Hoeffel, all of those 'sock it to mes' got the song banned from some stations. A mere year and a half later, I don't think any PD minded the squeaky-clean Osmonds using the same phrase in their first hit.

Returning to digging, Lenny Kravitz had a hit with "Dig In", in which he says that once you do as the title commands, you'll find it coming out the other side and you'll have yourself a good time.
