Just played the 3/29/80 show with Charlie Van Dyke sitting in. 49 songs were played:
The top 40, top 3 recap, 2 LDD’s, Hotel California as an extra for the biggest Eagles hit ever, (yet they are at #13 with I Can’t Tell You Why), and the 3 #1 archive songs of the 70s at the end of each hour.
I would guess 49 has been more than once. Would that be the record? Or have they played 50 before?

I know of several episodes that have played 50 shows. Also, a few that have played 100.

I'm not sure what the all-time record is in a 4-hour show, but there were 58 songs played on the Jan. 13-14, 2024 show.

Many of today's AT40s will be in this realm, with the show duration staying at four hours, and the average song length right around three minutes, give or take a few seconds.

I'm not sure what the all-time record is in a 4-hour show, but there were 58 songs played on the Jan. 13-14, 2024 show. That's an average of 14.5 songs per hour. I have been thinking for a few years now that AT40 could go back to 3 hours. At 14.5 songs per hour, that would be 43 songs in 3 hours. The real question is, what is the shortest average length of songs in a show. The record was originally set in the early 70s but it may have been broken in the 20s.

I have been thinking for a few years now that AT40 could go back to 3 hours. It'll probably never happen for one main reasons: advertising revenue from that extra hour.
