When Billboard tabulated the Top 100 singles of 1976, the charts department identified November 8, 1975 through October 30, 1976 as their survey period for ALL published charts, including Soul, Country and Albums. Over the years, many chart fans have expressed disappointment that there were a few late-year, Top 5 hits that were not accounted for in 1976’s or 1977’s year-end charts. In fact, throughout the 70s, the time period used for many year-end reviews, as well as the tabulation processes, have been called into question. Could there have been a later chart cut-off date to include more 1976 hits in the year-end countdown?
To provide an interesting, more balanced picture of the 1976 year – January-December – vince prepared and presented this tabulation, from early 2018.
This is the first year that the frozen week comes into play. I averaged the week before and after to get the position for the frozen week. If the number one song changed on the frozen week I gave each song credit for a half week at #1. For example, "Tonight's The Night" was credited as having 7.5 weeks at #1 and "You Don't Have To Be A Star" was credited with 1.5 weeks at #1. YDHTBAS will be on the 1977 list. If the same single was #1 before and after the frozen week, such as "How Deep Is Your Love", it is credited as having a full week at #1 for the frozen week.

Finding the middle ground…
Because there was a reasonable expectation of time needed to tabulate a year-end survey, perhaps a closing date adjustment for the year’s most popular singles – using the Hot 100’s 11/13/76 list instead as the cut-off – would’ve brought a few more “big hits” into the 1976 year-end calculation.
To provide an interesting, more balanced picture of the 1976 year – January-December – vince prepared and presented this tabulation, from early 2018.
On to 1976. Records peaking from 1/3/1976 through 12/25/1979 are eligible. On top is BB's #1 single of 1977.
