As we edge close to the 38th anniversary of MTV, I thought it would be interesting to note successful songs (let's make it songs that hit the top 3) in the 80's (after 8/1/81) that did not have an official video. I thought about this after hearing Jack Wagner's "All I Need" the other day. I know the latest number one in the 80's to not have an official video was "When I'm With You" by Sheriff in 1989. And I can think of a handful of songs that hit the top 3 after 8/1/81 that did not have official videos. I thought it would be fun to try to name as many as we can. Some off the top of my head include (besides the two I mentioned).
Never Been To Me - Charlene
Amanda - Boston
Islands In The Stream - Kenny and Dolly
Theme From "Greatest American Hero" - Joey Scarbury
Eye In The Sky - Alan Parsons Project
Truly - Lionel Richie (at least I don't think it had an official video)
At This Moment - Billy Vera (again, I think it didn't)
Could've Been - Tiffany
Didn't We Almost Have It All - Whitney Houston
There are a few, but I am sure there are many more. How many can you come up with?

Did Joe Jackson's "You Can't Get What You Want" have a video? I recall reading that he refused to do videos for a while in the 80's.

I believe that there were a few Top 3 hits by Prince that didn't have a video. I know that "Purple Rain" didn't - at least at the time of its chart run.

I’ve Never Been To Me has an official video, which was filmed rather quickly after the song started to take off in 1982. There apparently wasn’t much of a budget, especially for costuming; Charlene wears her own wedding dress in it.

I'd say the show itself was a music video for the song.

“Angel” by Madonna has no official music video. Probably because she was so overexposed at that point, what was the point of making another music video?

Maybe so, but it only peaked at #5 (perhaps no video didn’t help) and this thread is about #1/2/3 hits. At about the same time she did make a video for “Into the Groove”, not an official single but a club and airplay favorite that’s better remembered today.

I'd say the show itself was a music video for the song. Similarly, I watched Family Ties back then and the sequence with Alex and his girlfriend at the dance was pretty much a video for "At This Moment."

I don't believe "Amanda" had a video.

I don't believe "Amanda" had a video. Correct, it is one of the songs listed in the original post.

I don't think Bob Seger's "Shame On The Moon" had a video.

"Truly" did not have a video from what I remember, but I thought that "At This Moment" did have one of Billy and the Beaters performing the song in front of an audience. "Didn't We Almost Have It All" did have a video and I remember seeing it during the song's run on the charts, particularly on VH1: www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_4PlM85NJoWeird that "Could've Been" didn't have one. Tiffany seemed like the kind of artist that the record industry would've wanted to have on camera for any of her songs.

Correct -- and for anyone that remembers, "Into the Groove" was on MTV all the time that summer. In fact, it almost felt like it was the bigger hit between the two even though it never was released as a single and therefore never charted on the Hot 100. Another song from another big artist at the time that didn't have a video was Prince's "Pop Life". "Raspberry Beret" was also in heavy rotation on MTV during the summer of '85, but he decided not to do a video for the follow up, which made it to #7.

I thought "Angel" was Top 3. What about “The Girl is Mine” by Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney?
