Preston Epps died of natural causes May 9 at the age of 88. Epps took up bongos and conga drums while serving in Okinawa during the Korean war. His love of percussion turned into a lifelong career. One of his first times on record was as the main percussionist on the Penguins' "Earth Angel". He also toured with Ray Charles, Jackie Wilson, Little Richard, Johnny Otis, Sam Cooke, Jewel Akens and appeared as a headliner in Las Vegas. He has also been credited for discovering Lou Rawls. His real love was the bongos, and they would be the instrument that would help him to chart twice on the Hot 100. The only one to reach the Top 40 would peak at #14 during the first half of 1959.
