Leon Redbone passed away May 30 at the age of 69. Born Dickman Gobalain in Cyprus and raised in Toronto, Leon's musical stylings generally flew in the face of what was considered contemporary. A 1972 performance at Canada's Mariposa Folk Festival was witnessed by Bob Dylan, and his stock rose from there. He performed twice on the first season of "Saturday Night Live", and would return for two additional performances in later years. Some of Leon's other achievements included several appearances on the "Tonight" show, featured in several popular advertising campaigns including "Budweiser", and singing the theme for the TV show "Mr. Belvidere". One of his later notable appearances was providing the voice of "Leon The Snowman" in "Elf" where he duetted with Zoey Deschanel singing "Baby, It's Cold Outside". His musical stylings embraced the past, covering old blues and contemporary standards. His only Hot 100 hit charted 6 weeks and reached #72 in 1981. It featured lyrics from Gary Tigerman set to music that hearkened back to a much earlier era. Seduced - Leon RedboneObituary
