This breaks my heart. Dan Ingram was an icon in New York, from a count "up" perspective, and in radio altogether.
For me, "Top 40 Satellite Survey" ranks a close third to "American Top 40" and "Weekly Top 40". I loved listening to his voice, the different segments that he had such as "Guest DJ", "Honor Group of the Day" and "Word of the Day". I loved how his charts really made no sense yet it didn't bother me at all. Heck, I loved Melvin.
It's weird: he definitely was a "live on the edge" kind of DJ. Yet his voice soothed me in a way that made me turn in every time I had a chance. I was ages 10-13 during the run of the Survey, and it was amazing how in that time I went from just loving to hear his voice at age 10 to starting to understand the double entendre of his words by the time I was 12 or 13. And his double meanings weren't always sophomoric and juvenile. There was a creativity in his words, and emotion in his heart and voice. I absolutely loved that countdown.
We lost one of the pioneers in the industry with Dan. Truly an all-time great in the field!

He also might go down as the only nationally syndicated DJ to countdown a song he was a part of as he had a brief but memorable part in, "We Built This City".

Back in the mid 80's,WCBS-FM was the top rated oldies station in New York City-They also had a regular segment called "Future Gold" in which they played a song that was currently popular-In 1985,CBS-FM did a special version of "We Built This City" where the listener heard the voice of morning man Harry Harrison during the instrumental break.

Dan ranks in my top 5 of best jocks of all time. Harry Harrison 6am, Ron Lundy 10am, Dan Ingram 2pm, Cousin Brucie 6pm and Chuck Leonard 10pm. The best line up in radio on WABC back in the early '70's. I listened to Dan everyday back then while growing up till the day the music died on May 10,1982. They don't make DJ's like that anymore and no one can ever duplicate him. Honor group of the day, word of the day and his signature sign off song. Dan was a class act.

This must have happened around the country as well. I remember it on stations in North Carolina and Virginia where they would have one of their DJ's be the part of Dan.
