Wayne Cochran passed away Tuesday, November 21 at the age of 78. If you look him up in Joel Whitburn's "Top Pop Singles", you will find 1 entry. His cover of "Harlem Shuffle" bubbled under for 3 weeks beginning Christmas Day 1965. Performing live, the White Knight Of Soul was so much more. With his trademark champagne pompadour and jumpsuits, his concerts were said to be legendary. Backed by the C. C. Riders, his stage show was heavily influenced by label mate James Brown. Elvis is said to have adopted the jumpsuit concept from Wayne for his stage shows. Being such a dynamic performer, it was hard to believe that Wayne co-wrote the #2 1964 teen tragedy "Last Kiss" for J. Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers. Ten years later, it would reach the Top 40 for a group named Wednesday. Unexpectedly, it would return to #2 35 years later courtesy of Pearl Jam. He also co-wrote this non-charter, famously covered by the Blues Brothers. Goin' Back To Miami - Wayne Cochran
