A rough couple weeks for me. Another piece of my childhood gone. I need a timpani! Without Jerry and Ed (and of course Casey) Labor Day will never be the same. The telethon was my unofficial end to Summer. Young people today probably have a hard time believing at one time, the telethon was the bomb! In the days before youtube, it was a rare opportunity to watch 1st class entertainment at 3am. If you wanted to see artists perform their latest hit in the days before MTV, Jerry's show was the place! Plus you never knew when a legend like Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. might show up. To raise cash for MDA, I'm surprised they haven't put those old telethons on DVD and sold them. Here is just a taste. www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJqLDI_q5m0

Jerry reached the top 100 twice during the Rock era. His only Top 40 hit peaked at #10 early in 1957. It was originally a standard whose most popular version was introduced by Al Jolson in the Broadway musical "Sinbad". It would top the charts in 1918. Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody - Jerry LewisOf course his real "kid" was a bit more successful on the Hot 100. The first single released topped the charts. The first seven singles went Top 10, and the next two peaked in the Top 15. My favorite peaked at #3 for four weeks. She's Just My Style - Gary Lewis and the PlayboysRIP Jerry.

I remember trying to stay up as late as I could to watch these when they aired. I think there was only maybe one year where I actually did make it pretty far through the night. Now that I think of it, I do remember seeing Casey appear on a couple of these.
