For a while, the earliest mention that I had ever heard of John Lennon's death on the American Top 40 was in an Episode from January of 1981. But about one Month ago or more, I heard an Ep. from December of 1980, in which Casey Kasem paid a tribute to him. He talked about his Years with The Beatles and his life after they disbanded. And, at the end, he gave to Yoko Ono and one of his Children a Message. I also found out that it was a late change, because it was right after his murder. It was very appropriate, with Lennon's impact on Music, but I suppose that it was just a surprise for me.

It's too bad Casey never did the same with regards to a Michael Jackson tribute after he died in 2009.

The show was finished before Lennon died so Casey had to rerecord the "Starting Over" intro with the tribute and they sent a replacement record to the stations.

And I also believe they edited out a question about posthumous number one songs. An creepy coincidence for sure.

That is one of the shows I have in my AT 40 vinyl collection (December 13, 1980). It was a sincere and heartfelt tribute. It makes this countdown priceless in my eyes.

If AT40: The 80's airs the 12/13/1980 episode again in the future, how would Ken Martin put the posthumous artists question and John Lennon tribute in the same show?

The posthumous question was early in the first hour. Lennon was at number 4 that week so you could very easily keep them both in if you so desired.

I made a copy with both in it. I like it that way.

When was the last time that this Episode was aired?

When was the last time that this Episode was aired? It last aired on the weekend of 12/8/2007 - the only time it's ever been aired in this series. (Which, ironically, fell right on the anniversary date of his death.)

Actually, Ken probably shouldn't need to be involved in that--the posthumous artists question already exists as part of the original show LP's, and would simply need to be included as part of the rebroadcast of the show. In fact, XM already did this when they aired the show back in 2006 or so. The posthumous artists question was played in the first hour (where it was originally scheduled), and the Lennon tribute aired during the intro to "Starting Over" in the last hour. If Premiere were to re-air that show (which I assume they will at some point), they could use that same presentation (assuming it's available to them), or just insert the question...and that's assuming Premiere didn't already do the same thing when they played the show the first time around. Now, what's really a collector's item is the original intro to "Starting Over" on the 12/13/80 show--the one that was ultimately edited out and replaced by the special recording of the tribute. That intro would also exist as part of the original show LP's, but has presumably never been played as part of a broadcast of the show...unless of course one of the subscribing stations would've forgotten to replace with the tribute (or didn't receive the replacement LP in time) and played that intro. Even then, not sure how many recordings of such an instance would be floating around.

From what I remember, the version of the countdown XM played in 2006 included the original intro and not the tribute. This was when XM ran a marathon of AT40s in August before airing it weekly. According to the AT40 on XM website, they aired the show three times after that, but I don't know if the original intro or tribute aired as part of those.

I was thinking they could have brought Casey back just to record something quick for Jackson's death, but it probably wouldn't have been right to do that following his retirement (especially considering what we now know about his health at the time). Maybe they could have done a quick, Casey-less production piece mentioning his death (with Larry Morgan or somebody doing the voice-over), and tacked it onto the show.
