I would say the most unfair #1 denial is Louie Louie by the Kingsmen. Spending 6 weeks at #2 behind Dominique and There! I've Said It Again--especially in light of the fact that the single reached Number One in both Music Vendor and Cash Box.

I was just thinking about “Don’t Dream It’s Over” by Crowded House. That was their best chance at a #1 song but it was denied by Aretha Franklin and George Michael duet “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)”.

In February 1978,Randy Newman's brilliant "Short People" was kept from # 1 by The Bee Gees with their megahit "Stayin' Alive".
