The week I was born "Never Can Say Goodbye" (Jackson 5 version) was at #2 but never got past "Joy To The World". JTTW also denied "What's Going On" and "Put Your Hand In The Hand", which were both better songs IMHO.
Pre 1970's but in June 1969 "Bad Moon Rising" was kept out of #1 by "Love Theme From Romeo And Juliet", which is a pretty song but no match for the greatest Rock and Roll group that ever lived. Any of CCR's #2 peakers (and G-d knows they had enough) could probably qualify but that's the most obvious one I thought of. "Spinning Wheel" then replaced "Bad Moon Rising" at #2 but couldn't get past the Orchestra and was then jumped by "In The Year 2525" (Exordium And Terminus), which I actually like, just not as much as BS&T.

1987s C'est La Vie by Robbie Nevil, kept out of the top spot by Gregory Abbot and Billy Vera and the Beaters. Robbie wound up at #6 in the year end review, the other two didn't make the top 10. "Shake You Down" (the Gregory Abbott song) was #3 in 1987's year-end chart.

In 1988 "Devil Inside" - INXS looked like it was headed for #1 ,but got jumped over by "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" - Whitney Houston on 4/23/88. I think Whitney would have been #1 the following week even if INXS did hit #1.

Oh I just remembered another one. August 1987, "I Want Your Sex" by George Michael was denied the top spot by "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" by U2 and "Shakedown" by Bob Seger. "Sex" looked like it was going to go to number one but obviously never did.

U93, WNDU (Notre Dame University) didn't play the song at all. It's still U93, but WNDV now, and judging by what they play, I'm sure they would play it now.

In November 1974,Carole King's fantastic song "Jazzman" was kept from reaching #1 by "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" By Bachman Turner Overdrive.

How unfair is this #1 denial? The Village People song "Y.M.C.A." topped the charts of several countries throughout the world. The only reason "Y.M.C.A." couldn't top the Billboard Hot 100 of the United States was the Rod Stewart song "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" holding it off for two weeks (February 10-17, 1979). I guess American audiences must have preferred "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" over "Y.M.C.A.", although both songs topped the UK singles chart.

I've said many times that i was PO'ed that DYTIS beat out "What A Fool Believes" for R&R's top song of 1979. The above situation, however, was the song's saving grace. Of course I did used to like "Y.M.C.A." but got tired of hearing the song at every single dance party, wedding reception, or what have you - the formation of the letters just got old. Fortunately, they haven't made any kind of goofy dance to their other Top Ten hit "In The Navy" - yet, so I still like that song.

I think Whitney would have been #1 the following week even if INXS did hit #1. What's notable about this one in particular is that it marked the first dual Power Pick winner (both Sales and Airplay) to miss out on #1 since those weekly "awards" were introduced to the Hot 100 near the end of 1985. In fact, the week INXS won the dual honor, Whitney finished a very close second to them for one of them (Airplay, I believe). Of course, even if they'd gotten there, someone else would have snatched the #1 miss dis-honor very shortly afterwards - namely, the Pet Shop Boys' remake of "Always on My Mind". Talk about flaming in and out in a hurry...!

Back in those days, I worked at the South Bend Tribune and wrote a news story about this. If you want to see it, I've scanned the article as two JPEGs (sorry -- couldn't scan it all at once). Talk about flaming in and out in a hurry...! Unfair also because Clive Davis and Arista just HAD to get Whitney that seventh #1 in a row. As we all know, it remains a pop chart record for any artist, however dubious it may be.

Paul McCartney was on the losing side of this as well with "Live and Let Die", which got stuck at #2 for three weeks behind three different songs, all of which are inferior to it IMO. 10cc's "I'm Not In Love" also got stuck behind three different songs ("The Hustle," "One Of These Nights," "Jive Talkin'"). By the way, the three records that leapfrogged "Live and Let Die" were "The Morning After", "Touch Me in the Morning," and "Brother Louie."
