We all know that "I Heard It Through The Grapevine", is one of the best known songs of all time. The 2 most successful versions of that song are versions done by Gladys Knight and Pips and Marvin Gaye. Gladys Knight and the Pips's version peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1967 and Marvin Gaye's version hit No.1 on the Hot 100 in 1968-1969 and stayed on top for 7 weeks. But "Grapevine" isn't the only song that both Gladys Knight and the Pips and Marvin Gaye are linked to. In 1968, Gladys Knight and the Pips had a Top 20 hit called "The End Of Our Road" and that version peaked at No. 15 on the Hot 100 and 2 years later in 1970, Marvin Gaye's version also hit the Top 40. Unfortunately, history didn't repeat itself, as Marvin's version of "Road" only peaked at No. 40. Despite peaking at No. 40, "Road" does have a place in American Top 40 history. It was No. 40 on the Hot 100 on American Top 40's first show. That's right, it was the first song counted down when AT40 debuted the weekend of July 4, 1970.

It was on the second AT40 when Casey mentioned that Marvin's song was a cover of a Gladys and the Pips song in its second week at #40.

Lyricist Roger Penzabene penned "The End Of Our Road" along with "You're My Everything", "I Wish It Would Rain", and "I Could Never Love Another (After Loving You)". They were written as his marriage was falling apart, and came from his pain and suffering.
It proved to be too much for him, and he ended up taking his own life on New Years Eve in 1967.
