We have had threads where people have posted their favorite ad least favorite songs to go to #1, and their favorites to peak at #2. There's even been a thread for the #40 songs. No love yet for the other Top 5 positions on AT40? Well, now we can post our favorite songs to peak at #3. Some of these songs certainly deserved #1 status so it might be fun to see what everyone's favorite #3 peaking songs are.
Here's a link if you want a handy list of songs and their peaks... the link opens to 1980-1984 but other years are available: web.archive.org/web/20040407082330/http://www.gramble.com/music/80speak.html This link isn't entirely accurate but it's close (example, "Talking In Your Sleep" by The Romantics is listed in 1983 when it wouldn't hit the Top 10 until 1984).
I'll pick my favorite #3 song from each year of the 1970s and 1980s:
70: "Spill The Wine" by Eric Burdon & War 71: "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" by Joan Baez 72: "Backstabbers" by The O'Jays 73: "I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More Baby" by Barry White 74: "Tell Me Something Good" by Rufus 75: "Jackie Blue" by Ozark Mountain Daredevils 76: "Lowdown" by Boz Scaggs 77: "Couldn't Get It Right" by Climax Blues Band 78: "Hot Blooded" by Foreigner 79: "My Life" by Billy Joel
80: "Little Jeannie" by Elton John 81: "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" by The Police 82: "Eye In The Sky" by Alan Parsons Project 83: "Dirty Laundry" by Don Henley 84: "I Feel For You" by Chaka Khan 85: "One Night In Bangkok" by Murray Head 86: "Why Can't This Be Love" by Van Halen 87: "Luka" by Suzanne Vega 88: "Desire" by U2 89: "Love Shack" by The B-52s
1971 and 1983 had too many great songs peaking at #3. Some years had a bunch of songs peaking at #3 while other years, not so many.

My three favorite #3 songs.
Fooled Around And Fell In Love - Elvin Bishop Group Lowdown - Boz Scaggs Miracles - Jefferson Starship
It would have been great to include "Get Ready" by Rare Earth, but it peaked at #4 before the debut of AT 40. (Three to Get Ready)

"One Night in Bangkok" clearly is the best number three song ever, IMHO. Or IMNSHO. That's the one thing I loved about the 1980s - you never always knew which songs would or wouldn't be giant hits. I don't think anybody could have predicted the popularity of that song. Not Murray Head, not anybody.
Throughout the classic AT40 years, I think I liked more "show" tunes than the "winners". (Get it? Win, place, and show? Just horsing around. LOL)
