Rod McKuen passed away January 29 at he age of 81. A poet, songwriter, and recording artist, he was dubbed the "King of Kitsch" for the unabashedly sentimental mood behind his art. He was usually panned by the critics, but his works were loved the world over. His song "Jean" from the movie "The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie" earned an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe award. Oliver's version reached #2 on the Hot 100 in 1969, and spent 4 weeks atop the Adult Contemporary Chart. He was awarded a Grammy in 1969 for Best Spoken Word Album, "Lonesome Cities". He also collaborated with Belgian composer Jacques Briel. One of the songs became a #1 smash for an ex-Poppy Family member in 1974 (Seasons In The Sun - Terry Jacks). Though I was not a fan, I can appreciate his contributions to the millions who enjoyed his work. RIP Rod. www.wsj.com/articles/rod-mckuen-top-selling-poet-and-performer-dies-at-81-1422589504
