I was noticing that, "Lady" by Kenny Rogers was a new song on his "Greatest Hits" compilation in 1980. Interestingly, it would become the biggest hit of his career.
Any other time in the original AT 40 era (1970-1991) that someone put a new song on a greatest hits compilation and it actually became the greatest hit for that artist?

I know in Casey's second AT40 run, Lenny Kravitz did this - "Again" was his biggest hit there; got #2 AT40 and #1 R&R.

Although it's arguable whether it's their greatest hit, Thank you (Falettinme be Mice Elf Agin) was originally released on sly and the family stone's Greatest Hits album.

That's a good one...did AT 40 get away from R&R by 2001 (I think that was when "Again" was out)? Even if it only went to 2 on AT 40, I would consider it a bigger hit than "It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over".

One of Elton John's biggest hits "Philadelphia Freedom" was not on an LP until Greatest Hits Volume 2 two years later.

It pre-dates AT40 but this was a rather odd occurrence.
The Rascals released "Timepiece - Greatest Hits" a few weeks after they issued "People Got To Be Free." Both topped the single and album charts simultaneously. Oddly, PGTBF was left off Timepiece.

I believe AT40 switched to a different MediaBase chart at that time, but they switched back to R&R some time later.

Interestingly, I believe there was a live version that hit #1 that was placed on a compilation album that was an artist highest charting single. Mony, Mony by Billy Idol.
