Finally got around to hearing the #1 hits of the 70s special(that's a mistake in the thread title). You know almost every one of the song pieces that Ken inserted into the show did not come from AT40. He made them up himself and I think that was a great addition to the show. For example, the first piece was "Which Way You Goin Billy" in front of Terry Jacks. There was never a piece of WWYGB ever played on AT40. That montage of the #1 songs of 1974 had a couple songs added to it by Ken too. In fact, the last one "Cats in the Cradle" actually hit #1 the week that the first half of the year end special aired originally, 12/21/74.
The second half of that year end special aired on 12/28/74 and that is when you would have heard what Ken played in front of "Feel Like Makin Love" about Roberta Flack being the only female artist to hit #1 in 3 consecutive years. Ironically (and this was alluded to if you read between the lines in that montage where the last #1 song of the year is played afterward), "Angie Baby" hit #1 that week which meant that Helen Reddy had matched Roberta's feat of hitting #1 in 1972, 73 and 74.
And hearing this special makes it clear that the first 2 disco songs to hit #1 featured lead singers who were going to go in a different direction if those records flopped. Neither one did of course but Freedom Williams of the Hues Corporation left the group too early thinking that it HAD flopped while George McCrae was not so hasty!

Very good stuff dukelightning! That show was amazing but I didn't know all of that kind of work was put into it! And thank you statenislandfan for the nice comments. It was great to be able to present 4 AT40s, and all those songs made the radio sound so good again!

For most of the drop pieces in the show, Casey never played them. I felt that adding the pieces would help jog the memory of many people who don't necessarily remember a song by just mentioning it's title and artist. As you noted, the year end montages I created myself. I felt that using todays audio editing technology, they would sound better if recreated from scratch.
