They didn't buy the Weekly Top 40. They only entered into an agreement to distribute the show. And I doubt ABC thought about or gave any serious consideration to the idea since Dees worldwide was the #1 show by this point.

And I doubt ABC thought about or gave any serious consideration to the idea since Dees worldwide was the #1 show by this point. I really have to believe at that point, that Casey would have had zero desire to deal with ABC again. Add to it that it's a good bet that WW1 would have done whatever they needed to keep Casey. Combine those factors and it's hard to imagine Casey ending up back with ABC in '94. My guess is that once ABC realized that AT40 with Shadoe wasn't working out, acquiring Dees was really their only option to stay in the Top 40 countdown show game. Something I found very interesting is that ABC cut the deal with Dees for around $5M a year, while they balked at keeping Casey for $3M a year (or less when negotiations initially began)--thanks to Mr. Durkee's book for providing this info btw. Further evidence of how badly ABC botched the negotiations that led to Casey leaving for WW1.

It wasn't an issue. WW1 had Casey under contract and owned the show. They weren't looking for a distributor which is what people get confused on when discussing AT40/Dees in 94. ABC did not ever own the Weekly Top 40. Dees has always owned that. Even in his premiere days he owned it.

Pat Sajak was a candidate? Interesting that Ryan Seacrest will take over for Pat next year.

How about what if AT40 switched from the Billboard chart sources to use as sources Cash Box or Gavin Report?

How about what if AT40 switched from the Billboard chart sources to use as sources Cash Box or Gavin Report? I think the quality of Cash Box's charts (especially starting in the mid-1980's until they ended in the '90's) are called into question , which is why Dick Clark and Rick Dees probably discontinued using them. As far as Gavin, that could've been a better possibility since it was based on what stations were reportedly playing--however, with stations formats getting so fragmented countdown shows would've needed to get into narrow niches and may not have generated enough station affiliates to generate enough revenue from national advertisers.

Remember Dave Sholin's Insider Top 40/Top 30 from 1990-1991? That AT40 rival used the Gavin Report chart source!

Loved that show, since there were so many songs on that chart that never came anywhere near the Billboard Top 40, due to all the small market stations reporting to the Gavin panel. I might have said this before, but I have a feeling that was the main reason that they trimmed the show to a Top 30 in May, 1991. I, however, loved hearing all the obscure songs (though I can see why a casual listener would not).

I heard Ronald Reagan's son was actually a candidate to replace Casey. Ronald Reagan's son Mike Reagan hosted in 1987-1988 the original "Lingo" game show which was taped in Canada at that time.
