AT40 from August 27, 1983. Now on The Police's "King Of Pain", the highest debut on the Hot 100 that week.

Ok back to that matter at hand. This is my second editing analysis. A few weeks ago, I analyzed the oft edited "Love is Like Oxygen" and found it was edited 9 out of the 13 times it was played during its chart run. As for "Jivetalkin", it was not edited in its first 2 weeks on AT40. After that, the Brothers Gibb had the axe job done on them. It was played unedited in thier second week at #1 and in their last week on AT40. That means that 7 out of the 11 weeks they were on AT40 during that chart run, the song was edited. Different between the unedited and edited versions is about a minute so it is blatant. This appears to be the first instance of AT40 targeting one song to be consistently edited. Mid-1975 is on the edge of the phase during AT40 history where editing needed to be done because of the length of songs. In fact, the song that may be solely responsible for the editing on "Jivetalkin" is "Someone Saved My Life Tonight", a long song by 1975 standards. (To play that one unedited, they had to edit something else).[/quote]
Here is another odd editing situation. Subject this time is "Brother Louie". First 2 weeks on AT40 the whole version was played running close to 3:30. Then the next 7 weeks, they cut it way down most weeks to 2 minutes or even less. That includes both of its weeks at #1 and I just heard the 9/1/73 show today where it clocked it at 2 minutes. They finally played it in full for a third time. The next week it was back to 2 minutes or so with the second verse edited out again. At this point Casey said, "11 weeks on AT40 with 8 of those weeks in the top 10". I said to myself "11 weeks on AT40 with 8 of those weeks the song was edited!". Anyway, final tally ended up being 10 out of the 14 weeks the song was edited. So this appears to be the first case of a song being targeted for editing purposes. Once they found a record that could be easily edited, they obviously kept going back to it rather than find another song to be edited. Did not think editing had to be done as far back as 1973 but I was certainly wrong about that

Just finished 8/8/70 and 8/23/75, now onto 8/29/81.
The '75 show reminded me of why I rank 1975 low on my list of years in the 70's. This had to be one of the best shows of the year, yet there were still a number of slow spots throughout the countdown. The 3rd hour was very good, and so was the top 20 was for the most part. But the first 20 songs had some tough stretches (two words: Freddie Fender).
Great start to the '81 show--the Point Blank song at #40 is a great lost hit, and Billy Squier and Phil Collins with their last weeks in the countdown. Then "Draw of the Cards" and "Start Me Up"...while I concur with the person who said that "Draw" was a weak follow up to "Bette Davis Eyes", I have to admit I like the song.

August 29, 1987.
And you know how Premiere picked the album version of "Here I Go Again" as an extra back on July 4? Well, it's in this show as well. If in fact it was the "1987 version" that always played originally, then here's another show where the old switcheroo was done. (This last aired in 2009, BTW.)

It's the show from this date in 1976 for a late-evening hot-as-ever Friday night treat. Around 90 again in Pittsburgh today with no relief in sight for another week.
It never ceases to amaze me, how good the late-summer/early-fall period of '76 was musically. Very few songs to skip past in this countdown. One of those this week, though, was "Summer" by War. I generally have nothing against the song - I just couldn't listen to the praises of summer being sung, not after the week we've had and the week we're going to have.
I hate summer.

After watching my Huskers p*ss away another game on a freakin' HAIL MARY and losing their 1st home opener in 30 years, I am listening to the 9-7-85 show- The exact same show I heard on the way back from Lincoln back in 1985-COINCIDENCE?

This Husker fan thought the same thing regarding the 9/7/85 show coincidence. Anyway, on the pc now is AT20 from 9/3/05. I like that Casey says that the extra "Tempted" by Squeeze was a big hit in 1981 the same way on a previous AT20 show he said "Fantasy" by Earth, Wind & Fire was a big hit. These are not big hits on the Hot 100 but are perceived as such anyway. To that end, EWF in their concert here the other night, played "Fantasy" as their next to last song.
