matt, most radio stations felt the same way about Elvis tunes in the 70s. I can definitely say that I heard only "Burnin Love" and "Way Down" on the radio back then. Can't quite agree with you about his material but obviously a lot of program directors from that time do. Freddie Fender is my least favorite #1 song of the decade so I am with you all the way there! Listening to the 80s show from 1985 myself. Both "A" shows this week feature a reference to heroin in the first 15 minutes. Other than the following week in the 70s (4/8/72 when 'King Heroin' held at #40), you can probably count the number of times that Casey referred to heroin on your thumbs in between these 2 shows. And Casey ties in the 1985 show and the 1975 show matt is listening to, well almost. Says Patti LaBelle debuts with her first hit in 10 years, hitting #1 her last time out. She missed by one week of debuting exactly 10 years after she hit #1, on 3/29/75. That's funny you mention "Burnin Love" and "Way Down" - those are the two Elvis songs from the 70's that I like. I do like much of Elvis' early material--from the late 50's/early 60's. I just thought his 70's stuff was pretty unappealing. It feels like many of these songs were hits largely because the singer's name was Elvis Presley, and not because of the songs themselves. I agree, those are also my favorite 70s hits by Elvis Presley, "Suspicious Minds" along with "A Little Less Conversation" would be mine for the late 60s, then "(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear" and "Jailhouse Rock" from his late 50s songs!

It's 4/8/72 this morning. Casey announces before introducing Cher at number 16 that "If you're between the ages of 18 and 24, you know there's a 60% chance you haven't even registered to vote? Vote for your life."
Quite an amazing thing to hear on a countdown from back then. I'm shocked Tricky Dick didn't have Kasem deported to Lebanon for doing that.

AT20 from 9/2/06. Casey is already sounding surprisingly frail on this show.

This morning it's 4/14/79. This show features 15 disco hits, tying the record set just a few weeks prior. "Music Box Dance" reaches the top five and the only song in the top 10 that I'll bypass will be "Lady" by Styx. Not my favorite song of theirs, for sure.

We of course get most of the same songs this weekend from those that play Premiere's B show, especially WODC which should play the full four hours.

I know it's almost 11 a.m. here in the east, but I get disjointed sleep.

It's 4/2/83 now, the countdown in which the top 11 songs stayed put from the prior week.

The current AT40 pop chart on IHeart radio. Just realized it's been forever and a day since I listened to today's hits. Quite a number of good ditties on the show, even the ones aimed at the youth.
I must admit, I'm getting used to Ryan's style of counting down the hits.

Just finished 3/19/77 - so many great songs in this show and overall a very good show despite having to hear David Soul, Mary MacGregor, and Kenny Nolan back-to-back-to-back early in the top 10. Add to it a good set of extras. No doubt that 1977 from January through July is one of my favorite periods of the 70's.
My only real complaint is once again the degree to which "Blinded By the Light" is chopped--strange hearing only the first verse, a chorus, then into the closing part of the song. They're already playing the radio edit, so why chop it down even further? But they do it a lot with that song...and my guess is that most of the time it was originally done by the AT40 staff.
On to 3/17/84...yes I'm a few weeks behind!

Earlier today I relistened to the April 1971 countdown broadcast by SXM last weekend--two countdowns originally broadcast as far apart as April AT40s can be.

Up to number 14 on the CT40 from this date in 1989 and "You Got It" by Roy Orbison. This is one of my top songs from that year - or any other, for that matter. Such a great voice, great talent, great song. If I type the word "great" one more time, I'll be an honorary member of the Tony Bennett impersonators club.

The third show of my triple play today is the AT40 from the chart date 4/7/2001. Some great songs from back then, including the one at number 22, Moby featuring Gwen Stefani on "Southside". Other favorites: Daft Punk "One More Time"; Madonna "Don't Tell Me"; Dido "Thankyou"; Incubus "Drive"; and, Matchbox 20 "If You're Gone".
