Duke, those two shows are the only AT40 countdowns from the 1980s to which I've listened this week. I guess they led to my question. Thanks for the explanation, as always. Happy New Year to you, also.

I am moving on now to 1/9/93. A personal side note to the 1/9/88 chart date: My dog Trixie (a poodle-terrier of apricot color) turned 11 that day, but she would not see a 12th birthday, as she was diagnosed with cancer shortly thereafter and had to be put down on Mother's Day weekend of that year. I was a senior in high school awaiting graduation just weeks later, and I was devastated. That event was one of the most influential happenings in my life. Still is one of them, all of these years later.

That stuff sticks with you.

You better believe it does, Brett. It stays with you forever. I put down a cat of mine almost four years ago, and I don't think I'll ever forget about him, Mitchell. A tuxedo cat. Sweet little guy.
Anyway, today starts with 1/17/87, which will be followed by the CT40 from 1/10/98.
Edit: It's a shame that "The Way it Is" by Bruce Hornsby & The Range was always cut. This week's show eliminates the final verse. Such a pity. That's one song - along with "Another Day in Paradise" by Phil Collins and anything by Tears for Fears - that should never be cut. IMHO, of course.
Edit edit: Both countdowns today feature the song "Love You Down" - the original version (and favorite of mine) by Ready for the World, and the remake from 1998 by INOJ (not a bad attempt).

It's the CT40 from 1/12/91 right now and - wouldn't you know it? - two songs I really wanted to hear on the countdown were chopped into little pieces: "Moneytalks" by AC/DC and "Disappear" by INXS.

I must not be as familiar with those songs as I thought. Usually I catch edits instantly but did not notice blatant edits on those. BTW, I must not have gotten the memo that tall and thin are out and big is in back then. Martha Wash sings fine but the Stacey Q figure is what I like whether it's 2015, 2000, or 1985.

Maybe I heard them both incorrectly, but I thought they were chopped. Oh well. Onto today's shows: 1/13/79 and 1/18/86. They're years I seem to pair often.

I'm listening to this one today. I've been speeding through all the shows in order, skipping a lot of the songs because I don't really like most of them and I'm determined to hear all the shows eventually.

Two more shows today. The show where AT40 adopted new theme music for the first time in years, 1/14/84. This futuristic synth-based theme wouldn't last more than a year before being replaced. Debuting at 40 is "Send Me an Angel" by Real Life, which of course would be remixed and hit the Top 40 again in 1989. I'm only looking forward to a handful of songs in this countdown, so it won't take me long to get through the first show of my least-favorite year of the '80s.
After that, it'll be a show from 25 years ago (I know!), the CT40 from 1/13/90. "Another Day in Paradise" by Phil Collins is spending its fifth-and-final week atop the R&R chart, marking the first time Casey had introduced a song with such longevity at number one since Madonna's "Like a Virgin" spent six weeks there exactly five years earlier on AT40.
Ironically, "Say Say Say" by McCartney/Jackson was spending its last of six weeks atop the 1/14/84 survey as well.

Jumped on IHeart... final hour of 8/31/85... the original EdMac-announced airing from 2008! (Really? There is a Larry version from this past summer)
