Here is a great example of what technology can do, and how Billboard has chosen to use technology to come up with their Hot 100: www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/chart-alert/5793370/bon-jovis-prayer-re-enters-hot-100-due-to-viral-revival?utm_source=twitterI am curious for your opinion. Are you ok with this, not ok with this, or indifferent? Personally, I have issues with it. Are we going to read an article in ten years that Lorde's "Royals" made it to number 1 because when it hit the Top 10 her label paid people to just refresh her video over and over again? If people were yelling conspiracy about the charts in 1978 through 1982, they can have a field day with this. For the record, I stopped following the Billboard chart on November 30, 1991 but I still looked at the charts to catch a barometer of songs. Now, I don't even know if I can do that. I don't know what the answer is. I like somehow crediting things like Youtube, but when it can lead to you reentering the Hot 100 in the Top 30, it just doesn't seem right. However, the kid does nail it in the video

(#25) Oh-oh "Livin' On A Prayer"! I'm Switzerland as far as it re-charting. Billboard is in the music business. How they choose to accurately measure today's activity as a tool is up to them. That we use it to express our passion for music of our times, discuss topics, and exchange ideas is a great benefit.

I'm absolutely not ok with it. This is ridiculous and makes them (Billboards Hot 100) look like an even bigger joke than they already did. I invest zilch by clicking on a youtube link. At least calling a radio station I spent time and energy calling and asking. It also will only be played once every hour and a half to 2 hours. I can click this stupid youtube link over and over exerting no effort whatsoever. This is why I was fine with inclusion of iTunes sales. You invested SOMETHING. Airplay request: you invested SOMETHING. This? No.

Yeah, this sure opens the door to many oldies recharting. It is legitimate when a song like "Baby Blue" recharts because of inclusion in some current movie or whatever. But to rechart just because of youTube is chart chicanery IMO.

He didn't have a song on his show though. I have them on DVD from when Austin was little.

Very nice! I never saw the Mr. X one until a few years ago. I want to get them on DVD, just in case I ever have kids.

Lets do it with something good, preferably annoying and maybe make it a "shoulda been a bigger hit" kinda song...
Like Runnin Away by Sly Stone or How Do You Do by Mouth & MacNeal.
Then again, worlds more brilliant than The Fox...

I don't like counting streaming videos being part of the HOT 100 formula.
I've never heard about how much of the video needs to be watched to be counted.
Thinking of other 80's songs, if I pull up the video for "The Promise" by When In Rome (one of my favorite 80's songs) and only watch it for 15 seconds, does that count?
Or do I have to watch at least half of the video to count? Or must the entire video be watched?
I think the HOT 100 should be made up of radio airplay, physical music purchases and song downloads that are bought.
Just because you watched something on your computer it shouldn't count toward the HOT 100, in my opinion.

Plus these countings seem to be viral videos of people dancing to the song. Not the actual video.

Plus these countings seem to be viral videos of people dancing to the song. Not the actual video. If that counts, then perhaps we all should film people dancing to a song we like at a club, party, bar, etc. and post it to You Tube. Think of all the great past hits that could be pushed back onto the chart that way...

That happens every week on the UK charts and some titles even chart higher than when realising the original time. Like Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls.
The Voice, Pop Idol and shows like that, even TV commercials are the reason of those re entries.
Music is timeless.
