Agreed. I think they shortened it to about 2 minutes.

Well, Premiere did indeed chicken out by editing in 'bruises and stitches' instead of 'son of a biches' on "Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes" by Jimmy Buffett debuting at #38 for October 22nd, 1977 (10/20/77) so it is good I already have a copy of that particular song from its original broadcast circa 1977!

Heavily edited version of LDD 'Upside down', on the 10-24-81 show. Had to be Premiere's hatchet job.

This week's 70s show marks a change of sorts in AT40 history. Starting with this show and the "Somethin' Stupid" extra, they start adding extras into the show on a regular basis. This will continue for the 3 years from this point on until the 4 hour shows begin. Actually the extras continue at that point. But it does not cause songs to be edited as it did in the 3 years prior to the inception of 4 hour shows. I did not notice anything other the Premiere edits on this particular show in part because of so many short songs in the countdown (Natalie Cole, Captain & Tennille to name a couple). But soon these extras will cause edits to be made. So this is the week that extras were reintroduced into the show and from my perspective, it was something stupid to do! FYI, starting in Sept. 1972 up until this week in 1975, only 7 extras were played on AT40, extras having been played regularly prior to Sept. 1972 when songs were shorter then in the mid 70s and beyond.

dukelightning... I just checked the cue sheet for the original 10/28/78 show, and would you believe... the segment featuring #21, "It's A Laugh" by Hall & Oates, the AT40 Archives song, "The Love You Save" by The Jackson 5, and the end of hour outtro clock in at only 5 minutes and 53 seconds? Having said that, the last hour features a few album-length versions as "Kiss You All Over" by Exile, the only song in the segment, clocks in at a full 5 minutes in length. Some of the late '78 and early '79 shows feature a few album-length versions which I find refreshing.

Nights On Broadway on the 10/25/1975 show was a crazy edit. They left in the middle part (my favorite part) but edited the rest of it.

Just finished listening to the 10/5/91 show with Shadoe Stevens. Man there are some real bad loops on that show, the worst of which might have been Paula Abdul's "Promise of a New Day" - as the song was reaching the end, there was one stretch where they had Paula repeat the same part of the chorus 4 or 5 times. I was listening thinking, "did their record skip or something"? I realized it was a loop, but that's what this sounded like--a bad record skip, like back in the day when you listened to vinyl and there was a scratch across the record.
Seal's "Crazy" also had the second verse repeated twice, and there were another 2-3 songs where there were obvious loops inserted. Not sure how the AT40 execs thought they were going to get away with that junk when those songs were at the time being played in heavy rotation by the radio stations who also carried AT40. People were used to hearing the songs as they were normally played on radio, surely it was going to occur to most listeners that something didn't sound right when they heard the loops--that is, if it wasn't already obvious. Another major blunder on the part of the decision makers at ABC which presumably did nothing to help the show's ratings decline...

Trying to fill the time they had on their hands as a result of editing "Enter Sandman" down to 2 minutes or less, no doubt!! Have not heard that show but they ALWAYS edited that song!

They didn't edit "Enter Sandman" on the 11/16/91 show. Not sure whether or not it was the only time they played the whole song.

And like most rap songs, they must've cut "O.P.P." down to about a minute and a half. I've said before that I'm not a big fan of most rap, but how ridiculous that they'd chop songs like that so badly and loop the others. As Don Bustany was quoted as saying: complete and total mismanagement on the part of the execs...

On the 1978 show, the Lp version of "Mama Told Me Not to Come" was played. When that song was on AT40 in 1970, every time, they played the 45 which has a fade ending. This LP version that was played as an archive song has a longer, cold ending. Same thing happened with THIS week's #1 song "Hot Child in the City". While it does have a cold ending on the 45 that was played, the Lp version has a coda after that. And that Lp version was played in 1980 when THAT was an archive song.

I'm right now listening to the 9/14/85 show from Premiere and they had this weird edit for "You're Only Human," where they split the first and second verse of it.

'Gloria' had an edited album version. 1 of the verses was edited out.
