How often has there been a #1 song from both a movie soundtrack and the soundtrack of one of its sequels? I can think of two examples and one time where it almost happened.
The two examples:
"Gonna Fly Now" from Rocky and "Eye of the Tiger" from Rocky III "Batdance" from Batman and "Kiss from a Rose" from Batman Forever
The close call:
"Ghostbusters" from Ghostbusters (peaked at #1) and "On Our Own" from Ghostbusters II (peaked at #2)
Also, "Burning Heart" from Rocky IV almost made it three films in a franchise with #1 hits. It peaked at #2.

Beverly Hills Cop is another close one: The original had the #2 "The Heat Is On," and Beverly Hills Cop II had the #1 "Shakedown." It also contained the #2 hit "I Want Your Sex," so that's a movie series with two movies each having a #2 hit (sorry, I was reading the #2 songs thread before this)
Would the James Bond series count as another close one? They've had 2 #2 hits in "Nobody Does It Better" and "Lie and Let Die," and the #1 "A View To A Kill," but I don't know if they were direct sequels to each other.

I was thinking of the James Bond films myself. At the very least, it's a franchise that came close to the feat.
I also wondered about A Hard Day's Night and Help! The themes from both of those films went to #1 but I don't know if Help! was a sequel or not.

In between Live and Let Die and The Spy Who Loved Me was The Man with the Golden Gun (theme of the same title by Lulu -- I love that wee Scot but the song is subpar). There would then be three films between The Spy Who Loved Me and A View To A Kill.

There would then be three films between The Spy Who Loved Me and A View To A Kill. One of those was For Your Eyes Only from which the title song reached #4. The next one with a title I can't print here did not have a title theme ("All Time High" only reached #36) and then Never Say Never Again had a weird theme song that did not crack the top 100.

"Batdance" from Batman and "Kiss from a Rose" from Batman Forever There was also "Foolish Games" by Jewel, a #1 on Casey's Top 40 from Batman and Robin.

On the Radio and Records charts, the previous two Batman songs reached #1 just like in Billboard, so the Batman franchise had three #1 songs in R&R.

Although I can't think of any others than what's been mentioned above, this exact subject was the idea for an AT10 Spotlight several years ago.

"Doesn't Really Matter" didn't hit #1 on AT40, but it did in Billboard and was from "The Nutty Professor 2."
Breakaway - Kelly Clarkson (The Princess Diaires 2) Low - Flo Rida (Step Up 2)
