Aretha Franklin's version of "The Weight" may have charted higher, but I'd say the original by The Band is the definitive and generally better known.

Jimmy Jones had the original of 'Handy man', which James Taylor covered in '77. I think most folks would remember sweet baby James' cover, over Jimmy's original.

Just got done with the 11/8/86 show--at #1 was Boston's "Amanda". While most people remember this song, you could make a strong case that it was not Boston's most well known. "More Than a Feeling", "Don't Look Back", and "Long Time" all seem to be more well known today, as they are all in decently heavy rotation on the classic rock stations. "Amanda" remains their biggest hit chart wise however...and their only #1.

If you ask the average Bob Seger fan to name all his songs it might take 'til the 30th to get to Shakedown (peak #1).
Chicago radio never plays Tryin' To Live My Life Without You, Fire Lake, You'll Accomp'ny Me, Against the Wind, and I love all of those, and they're certainly more representative of his sound and career.

The song that immediately popped into my mind is "Rock On". First performed by David Essex who took it to number five in March 1974, Michael Damian inexplicably thought it needed to be remade, and hence took it to number one in 1989 - one of 7,520 #1 songs that year (j/k). I don't think anybody outside of Mr. Damian's immediate circle of friends and family remembers his version. Or cares to. Same here, but as a fan of the highest rated soap opera on TV since 1987, The Young and the Restless, for which Michael Damian played singer Danny Romalotti from 1984-2013, you can begin to understand why "Rock On" hit #1 back then, that said, I also prefer David Essex's version!

Joan Jett made the top 40 with her cover of "Dirty Deeds", but the original version by AC/DC remains the best known, especially as it still gets classic rock airplay.

I know many AC stations play the Goo Goo Dolls' godawful remake of Gove A Little Bit but Supertramp's original is better and charted higher.

Joni Mitchell's version of "Big Yellow Taxi" didn't hit the top 40, but it is the version that reconize more.

This is kind of a stretch regarding the topic, but In R&R, Tina Turner's only #1 hit was "Typical Male" when her best-known solo hit is obviously "What's Love Got To Do With It."

This could very well be a generational one, but perhaps Cher's version of "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)" could be better known than the Betty Everett original despite peaking lower? Depends who you ask.

In early 1992, the Disney pop group The Party hit the top 40 (#16 R&R, #30 AT40) with their cover of "In My Dreams". These days, the original version by Dokken (#77 Hot 100 in 1986) is the better known, while the cover has gone obscure.

I didn't even know there was a Dokken original. 😳

I really like both versions, with a slight edge to The Party. I've been listening to the CT40 shows in order from 1992 this year, with their version climbing the charts. Casey does mention it being a remake of Dokken's hit. I don't remember hearing Dokken on the radio back then...and I didn't hear The Party much outside of CT40 either. Great song.
