They opted for artistic freedom from Don Kirshner's hit making machine. Although the decision ultimately spelled the end of their career as hitmakers, they did continue to release great tunes like this lost 60s classic from July 5, 1969. It would peak at #63 and stay on the charts for 8 weeks. Written by Mike Nesmith, it was the first time his lead vocals were featured on the "A" side of the single. Listen To The Band - Monkees

On July 7, 1962 this blues legend only Hot 100 single was in its seventh week on the chart at #70. It would eventually peak at #60 and hang around for three more weeks. He employed Joe Hunter for this recording session. Joe bought along some fellow musicians: Hank Cosby, James Jamerson, and Benny Benjamin. All four musicians were also members of the Funk Brothers, the musical backbone for all the great Motown recordings of the sixties and early seventies. They were a great complement to this man's "booming" and distinct vocal style. Three years later, the Animals would cover this song and it would become a lost 60s classic a second time peaking at #43 Cable station TNT's tag line this summer is TNT...boom! We'll do it one better. Boom Boom - John Lee Hooker
