From what I read, the #1 and #3 R&B songs of 1983 never made it to AT40. I especially like "Atomic Dog", since it's very upbeat, and resembles the golden age of arcade games back in the day. "Atomic Dog" should have at least peaked at #40, in my opinion.
"Juicy Fruit" by Mtume, I think I remember hearing it seldomly when I am at a club devoted to 80's music in the virtual world of Second Life. I will have to check out "Juicy Fruit" by Mtume on YouTube and see if I can become interested in such song, as I liked it when I heard it in Second Life, but rarely heard it.

I think the only top 40 list "Juicy Fruit" made was Cashbox. It was in 2010 that I heard part of the SXM 80s on 8 countdown and that was at 39. Did not make R&R top 40 so they must have been using Cashbox at the time. Other great and even better songs that did not make AT40 from this list are the Gap Band's "Party Train" and the Mary Jane Girls' "All Night Long", both played on my local R&B oldies station, and Evelyn King's "Betcha She Don't Love You" which top 40 radio in Albany played back in 1983. BTW, you have listed it as the B side but the youtube link is to that song. So I guess you actually did realize it was the A side.
And she is alive and well. Someone posted under the "Love Come Down" video an RIP. Born the month before I was.

And yet another #1 R&B hit by Aretha and produced by Luther Vandross, "Get It Right". Luther deserves a lot of credit for reviving her career.
Another great list of songs.

Re: #17 -- Is that the same Sonny Charles who fronted the Checkmates Ltd in 1969 with the soulful hit "Black Pearl"?

Yes he is and Casey mentioned just that when this song debuted at 40 on the 1/22/83 show. (And then held the position the next week before dropping out).

That is a great list of R&B songs from 1983. I have to say that 1983 had some great R&B songs. I remember listening to most of those songs on the radio. There were a few songs on that list that I don't remember and some that I haven't heard in years. But looking at that list brings back lots of memories.

Good songs mentioned above. But my favorite was "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" by Indeep.
