LAS VEGAS -- Eydie Gorme, who was best known as the wife of singer Steve Lawrence and for a major top 10 solo hit in 1963, died today (8/10/13) at Sunrise Hospital following a brief undisclosed illness. According to writer Steven M. Silverman, she was 84. She would've turned 85 this Friday. Here was her biggest solo hit, which reached #6 on the Cash Box pop chart in 1963... www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaRlW-jz1QQLawrence, who met Gorme on the set of the Steve Allen-hosted "Tonight Show" around 1954, reflected, "Eydie has been my partner on stage and in life for more than 55 years. I fell in love with her the moment I saw her and even more the first time I heard her sing." They married on December 29, 1957. Among the witnesses were Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, who got married the same day. Steve and Eydie had their own TV show in 1958 but it was cancelled after one season because Steve was drafted into the Army. Once he got his discharge, Steve and Eydie became an unforgettable duo, singing together from roughly 1960 to 2009. They put out 93 albums, plus won a dozen Emmys and two Grammys. Fifty years ago this weekend, Steve and Eydie were at #67 on the Cash Box chart with this romantic ballad... www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeH-Su-_EPEAnd let's not forget this dandy uptempo duet from 1964... www.youtube.com/watch?v=eW-U7DZRlWYAccording to Wikipedia, Edith Garmezano was born on August 16, 1928.
