Does this affect SXM playing the 70s version of AT40 or is that completely unrelated?

I would imagine this is separate and the butchered AT40s will remain.

As far as I know, the dropped stations don't affect playing of AT40 in any way, not even the current version, which is aired on KIIS and Z100; KIIS is basically AT40's mothership today, as it's Ryan Seacrest's home base. (Ironically, in the 1980s it was Rick Dees' home station, and thus gave birth to AT40's most durable rival.)
There is one AT40 connection among the stations dropped from SXM; they include the Clear Channel-programmed Sixx Sense, whose main hosts are Motley Crue's Nikki Sixx and Casey Kasem's daughter Kerri.

I think it's been speculated - I believe it's in one of the Rick threads - that KIIS's refusal to cooperate with demands from ABC in 1983 was what led first to the show's removal from the station, then to the creation of Rick's countdown. What's ironic, though, is that the very week that Shadoe took over for Casey, the show returned to KIIS. Not sure if it lasted for all the way to July 1994 when it disappeared from the States (Shadoe Fan or Pete might be able to answer that one).

If you think about it, you realize ABC's stupidity created BOTH of their competitors to AT40 and caused their own demise.
