How far in advance did the producers, staff, etc. know that Casey was quitting AT40? I just today was looking at the letter that Charis has attached to the show notes of 7/30/88 and it talks about Hall & Oates guest-hosting, it mentions Casey is on vacation AND it mentions Shadoe will be joining the show on 8/13/88. The note is dated July 22, 1988.
That had to be awkward...

They had to have known about it for months before then, as Shadoe's selection was disclosed in May 1988 IIRC and that came after several auditions and considerations of others. I'm not sure exactly when Casey decided to jump ship for Westwood One, but it must have been no later than March.

leemichaelwithers.tripod.com/americantop40.htmBookmark this site for a great source of information. Short version: It appears that negotiations on a new contract began as far back as early 1986 (!). They ultimately failed, and it was reported in Billboard magazine first in February, then again in April (April 9, per the bibliography in Pete's book), that a search for a replacement was underway. The May 28 issue reported both that Shadoe was the guy and that he'd be coming in somewhere between mid-July and early August. Unfortunately, none of these issues are available on Google Books, as indeed, no 1988 issues of Billboard are available there at this time.

Yeah, my understanding is that the contract negotiations for Casey to re-up with ABC/Watermark for another six years or so broke off for good sometime around February 1988, by which time Westwood One had already been courting Casey to make the jump. As Mike says, the 4/9/88 issue of Billboard broke the news in an article that Casey was leaving to start another Top 40 program at WW1. So we can assume that Casey was on cruise control throughout most of 1988.
