With Robin Thicke seemingly about to hit the jackpot with "Blurred Lines" (Number one "Billboard", number 12 (AT 40 up six), number 9 on Dees (up 11 notches), I'm wondering has any mom and son had separate Top 3 hits? Top 10 hits? Top 40 hits? His mom, Gloria Loring, had a number 2 hit in 1986 with Carl Anderson ("Friends and Lovers"). I have a feeling Thicke, who already has eclipsed his mom on the Hot 100, will do the same on the radio shows as well. Pretty impressive mom/son feat!

Shirley Jones and Shaun Cassidy. Can't think of any more mother/son combinations.

And she's his stepmother. Maybe Ben Taylor will do it someday. Or Sean Lennon. Or Miguel Ferrer.
What about the Cowsills?

I remember Gloria Loring when she had a huge hit in 1986 with "Friends and Lovers". She was a regular actress on a daytime soap during that time, and she was even a celebrity player on the game show Super Password on occasion (she was the female celebrity player on the 1984 premiere accompanying Pat Sajak of Wheel of Fortune fame, and I think the show's premiere week may be on YT).
I wonder if Gloria Loring may be the only celebrity game show player who was mostly an actor or actress to make it to AT40? R&B legends Smokey Robinson and Gladys Knight (non-acting celebs, the former who was presently on AT40 then with "One Heartbeat", and the latter about to release her comeback hit "Love Overboard" with The Pips in a few months' time) did appear for a week on The $100,000 Pyramid in the fall of 1987, and GSN will be airing that week pretty soon!

The Premiere countdowns and some of the topics of these threads sometimes tie in with each other quite a bit. This week's 70s show features the song at #1 ending with Toni Tennille ad-libbing that 'Sedaka's back'. But fast forward five years later and Sedaka's comeback is at its end with this week's 80s show featuring him in the top 40 for the last time. That is a duet with his daughter. Go back exactly three years and the son of a mother who had been #1 herself in 1970, is at #1 himself. That would be the aforementioned (from an earlier post) Shaun Cassidy. BTW, that show was guest hosted so you won't ever be hearing it on Premiere.
FYI, Shirley Jones did not get billing on a #1 song but a year later, "I Woke Up in Love This Morning" was billed as the Partridge Family featuring Shirley Jones and starring David Cassidy. Casey once said he did not have time to say the song's title in the intro because of the long billing. There was no lineup change between 1970 and 1971.

She's the stepmother of David, though. This is for anyone who was around for the Partridge Family going to number one: Was Shirley Jones actually one of the musicians on "I Think I Love You"? For some reason, I've always thought that she was but I'm not sure. She still didn't get solo or lead credit on the song. It's amazing that this might be the first time in history that a mother and son each had a Top 40 hit where each was given lead billing, much less a Top 2 hit. NOTE: Just saw dukedeb's post so I assume that Shirley Jones was part of the music and given credit on one of the Partridge Family's hits, but not a Top 10 hit...thank you!

According to Songfacts, Shirley Jones did sing back up vocals on the recordings. She and David Cassidy were the only actors from the show who performed on the records. www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=14014

Bob Rosenberg of Will to Power and Gloria Mann. Casey told that story several times over the years.

Did Gloria Mann have any hits in the rock era (not that it matters...just curious)? That's neat that of the three instances so far, the sons all had number one hits.

Pre-rock era (and in fact pre-Billboard charts), but Harriet Hilliard sang lead on several big hits by Ozzie Nelson & His Orchestra (although I don't think she got official billing). Her son, of course, was Ricky Nelson.
Regarding the Partridge Family, I can't speak for what was on the label of their #1 "I Think I Love You", but the single's picture sleeve did list the artist as "The Partridge Family Starring Shirley Jones Featuring David Cassidy" (and that's how it's listed on the Hot 100 chart as well).

Yes, Gloria Mann hit #18 in 1955 with "Earth Angel Will You Be Mine" and #19 in 1956 with "Teen Age Prayer."
