Has Rick Dees been mentioned or referenced on AT or CT 40 since his "Weekly Top 40" has been on the air? I can't remember it if he has. Not that he would necessarily be mentioned for any reason, but since he has a number one song, a novelty song, and a song about an animal, it would seem logical that the song could have come up in a question that Casey or Shadoe answered. I do remember the Ray Stevens (Henhouse Five Plus Two) song, "In The Mood" having a snippet played, but that could have been for animals on a Top 40 song and not specific animals. Just curious if Casey or Shadoe ever had to say the name, and the accomplishment, of the competition.

At least one AT40 Flashback during Shadoe's tenure featured Disco Duck in that week's top 5.

Other than Flashback references, I never noted Shadoe mentioning Rick Dees on any of his programs. I did note that during one show Rick Dees was on the network commercial, but I didn't note what for.

Reportedly, a listener question about disc jockeys having hits was cut from a Shadoe AT40, as that would have required him to mention Rick Dees, and Watermark didn't want to implicitly promote the competition. For similar reasons, when "Disco Duck" was a hit in 1976, other stations in Memphis where Rick then worked wouldn't play it, and he wasn't allowed to play it himself.

I always wondered if questions were manipulated over the years so that Rick Dees would not be mentioned in the answer. As I mentioned before, the uniqueness of the song and his position in the music world would seem to lend to at least "Disco Duck" or Rick Dees being an answer to someone's question. Rick never got to hear it in Memphis, never got credit for it where he was working, it never went to number one on R and R so he couldn't do his "number one" bit on his own show, and it became a footnote, it seems, on AT 40 after 1983. Fascinating. It's funny that they did a Flashback, however with him in it. Maybe they figured they were saying Casey's name at the end of every show they might as well throw Rick in there one time as well. Someone mentioned on another question that "Into The Night" was promoted on AT 40 when it had its run, so that might have been why he was mentioned. I also remember, I think, a Spam commercial on AT 40 that sounded like Rick was doing it, but I can't remember what year or years that would have been from, and if it was Rick at all.

I have lived in the Memphis area all my life and I do remember hearing the song being played by Rick before it charted. After "Disco Duck" started its climb up the chart, it was rarely, if ever, played on any of the Memphis radio stations that I listened to (WHBQ 56 AM, WMPS, or WMC FM 100). Memphis didn't have AT40 at that time so I didn't hear it there.

For the same reason Dees never has been an answer to a trivia question or even mentioned since at least 1983 on AT 40, the competition didn't want to promote a rival station's DJ. Then, if I remember the story correctly, he was fired from his own station for either playing or promoting the song. So Memphis essentially went "Disco Duck" less for its whole run. I'm sure Caseyfan4ever can elaborate being from Memphis, but I think that is how it all shook down.

When Angie Martinez was in the Top 40 with "If I Could Go" in 2002, Casey did a story about DJs who hit the Top 40 (she had been a DJ in New York City) and he named Rick Dees.

Were there any listener questions through the years about animals or birds or waterfowl or any sort that hit the Top 40? Besides the angle of asking about DJs or novelty songs hitting #1, there's not a whole lot that could inspire a Dees reference, is there?

Fascinating. Actually, Rick wasn't consistent in the chart data he used with his flashback-type segments. I'm listening to the July 1989 show up at Rick.com, and he just recited the top 3 from July 1982 using Billboard's data. He played a piece of the Human League's "Don't You Want Me", which he said was #1 that week in 1982--which it was in BB, but it only peaked at #3 in R&R.

The top 3 on Cashbox for 7/10/82 match what he said, but so does Billboard's top 3 for 7/3/82, and since this was the 7/1/89 show I figured that was closer date-wise.

I referenced in my first question a question that was answered that had the Henhouse Five Plus Two's, "In The Mood" but I'm not sure what the question was. It might have just been a drop piece actually. I think that of all artist that have hit number one, Dees would have more going for him than most when it comes to being unique enough to be an answer to a question. Being a DJ, number one songs that had the word "disco" in them, songs that mention birds, number one animal songs, novelty songs, comedians hitting number one, late night talk show hosts having a top 40 hit, whatever. It just seems like he would have been an answer, at some point, to someone's question. I think it's fair to say there was never a, "Whatever Happened To" segment for Mr. Dees done on AT and CT 40!
