In 1986, American Top 40 did a special called, "The Giants Of Rock". It was a countdown based on a poll from DJ's from all over the world where they were asked on what artists had the biggest impact on the music business at that time. I spent 3 days listening to that special last week and it was a great special. So, here are my thoughts about the GOF special:
It was a really interesting special, but it also had a few surprises. I was surprised that artists like Daryl Hall and John Oates, Billy Joel and Lionel Richie were ranked in the countdown. I was also surprised that not 1 female solo artist was in the survey. It is amazing that female artists like Janis Joplin, Linda Ronstadt, Aretha Franklin, and Tina Turner weren't in that survey. Madonna could've been in that countdown too, but she had only been charting for a couple of years and she was at that time, in the early stages of her chart dominance. Also, I felt that groups like The Mamas and The Papas, the Bee Gees and the Go-Go's should've been in that countdown. I was also surprised that Michael Jackson was ranked only No. 26 in that countdown. I felt that he should've been ranked higher. It is not surprising that Elvis Presley and the Beatles were the Top 2 acts in that countdown. If AT40 had done that special today, I would have to say that the survey would probably look much different now from the way it was back in 1986. We all know that the music scene is much different now than it was in 1986. Casey may have said that "The Disappearing Acts" special is his all-time favorite special, but I have to say that the "Giants Of Rock" special may have been his best. Also, the organ sound that was used when Casey used to do the AT40 archive segement on AT40 from 1978-1981, was played several times throughout the show. One more thing, this special was aired the same week that actress Lindsay Lohan was born. I just thought I add that in there.
