Ok, heard about the guitar solo being cut out of Olivia newtons jons magic, why? the song is not that long anyway. Other songs that got butchred I recall are these unnecessary ones .. What are we doing in love by dottie west. on one show , kennys first section is totally cut out, why? songs only like 3 mins anyway. another song. The Tubes. don't wanna wait anymore, the 3 sec guitar solo after the first verse is cut? why? Draw of the cards by kim carnes, the guitar solo is cut in half? never understood some of these edits.

The edit (actually an overlap) on DONT WANT TO WAIT ANYMORE is the 45 version. AT40 did NOT edit it.
Same with DRAW OF THE CARDS

My question is what determined when an edit was done? Obviously they were done for time constraints, but what determined which songs got the ax? Was it songs that had been on the chart for many weeks or was it just luck of the draw? As for the Premiere or SXM edits I think it's just songs that aren't liked by whoever is editing. Was just listening to a recent 1977 show and Kenny Rogers' "Lucille" was cut down to just the first verse and the fade out chorus (thus the entire of story of the song was completely lost).

yeah, and my thing is that a lot of songs that get cut are under 3 and a half mins to begin with. I don't see the logic, I can see if a song is like 5 to 7 mins long. but in a lot of cases they are really under 4 mins. and just a second or 3 are cut.

Before the last chorus of "Come As You Are" by Peter Wolf, there's a bridge where he sings "Whoa-oh" three times. The middle whoa-oh was cut and it screwed up the continuity of the song. And it was totally pointless, as it took out but two seconds of the song. Totally not worth the trouble, IMO. Just fade another song in the same hour two seconds early.

hervard, I remember that part. why they would go through the trouble to cut that out I will never know, isn't like its stairway to heaven..

I Love A Rainy Night in the prior week recap was brutal, just brutal. It was like the 60 second sample they give you before buying a download. By this point in 1981, AT40 had been at 4hrs for about 2 1/2 years so they couldn't have been that pressed for time. Editing last week’s #1 is obvious: the same song will be played in full later in the show.

Some rough ones this weekend: Satin Soul was snipped, but maybe not so noticeable as an instrumental. Both Fire and Chevy Van had awful hacks. And on the 1985 show don’t bother playing We Are the World if you’re going to talk over the Stevie Wonder/Bruce Springsteen call and response, by far the best part of the song.

They were having trouble finding time for the recaps by then, and before long it was common for them to only play the #1 song or just have Casey announce the song titles.

I think Ken Martin said it best: The unfortunate reality is that time is unforgiving. You can't squeeze 5 minutes into 3 without cuts somewhere. If it wasn't the Lobo song it would have been another. Everyone has their favorites and will complain vociferously when it's chopped. AT40 had to do it when the show was originally produced and Premiere has to follow the same rules of the road governed by the clock as well. Sadly, some people on this board are unable or unwilling to accept that fact.

I've given my opinion regarding edits before. I get that they are a necessary evil, and usually they don't bother me too much. There are some cases where they are overreaching however, and you feel like the execution of edits could be done better. Editing "I Love a Rainy Night" in the top 3 recap makes perfect sense. I agree that the edit is a little aggressive for my liking, but it's better than cutting a couple other good songs in the countdown since that song got a second spin later on in the top ten.
My complaints are typically when:
1) The same songs get picked on over and over, which I feel like Premiere has done a better job with in recent years (it used to feel like certain songs got the axe because they were either long songs or just a matter of convenience, as they were easy to cut--songs like Culture Club's "Move Away", Wham's "Edge of Heaven" and Bruce Hornsby's "The Way It Is" seem to have gotten cut during the majority of the shows on which they appeared) 2) A song gets edited in it's only chart appearance -- this doesn't happen often, but has happened (see Real Life's "Catch Me I'm Falling" on the 5/5/84 show, where the second verse was cut) 3) A verse or part of the song discussed by Casey in his intro gets cut, thereby making the intro sound nonsensical (see Toto's "Stranger In Town" during the 11/24/84 show, and John Mellencamp's "Cherry Bomb" got the same treatment once during its run)
