NASHVILLE -- George Jones, the country music superstar who had a record 166 country hits in a 56-year (1955-2011) span, died this morning (April 26, 2013). He was 81. According to publicist Kirt Webster and katc.com, Jones died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he'd been hospitalized with fever and irregular blood pressure. According to Billboard writer Gary Trust, Jones was the king of the country charts. In addition to his record 166 hits from 1955 to 2011, he had 78 Top 10's and 13 #1's. Also known as the Possum, he recorded over 200 albums. According to Wikipedia, the New York Times called him "the definitive country singer of the past half-century." George Jones thus charted in seven decades and had a #1 country hit in at least four decades. While Jones never crossed over to the pop chart in terms of a Top 40 hit, he did sing background vocals with Jape Richardson (a/k/a The Big Bopper) and Bill Hall on this early-1960 #1 hit by Johnny Preston... www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3meEmDpaDUHere's George's biggest hit from 1961... www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wo5wyAn4Fn0Another of George's chart-toppers was this 1962 song... www.youtube.com/watch?v=UquXUYfHYokAnother singer familiar to all of us remade that song as the flip side of "Moody Blue" 15 years later in 1977.... www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJRZ-A9rjjwFor more on George Jones... www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJRZ-A9rjjw
