Instead of an obituary, I thought I'd post three birthdays of note for Monday, April 22:
Glen Campbell: Sure there's the #1 singles "Rhinestone Cowboy" and "Southern Nights". There's also his CBS variety show which ran for 3 years.
But the achievements that I really think are great are:
- Member of the Wrecking Crew.
- Lead vocalist of the studio group Sagittarius, whose "My World Fell Down" is a psychedelic classic. They also do a great cover of the Beach Boys "In My Room".
- Speaking of which, he was a touring member of the Beach Boys filling in for Brian Wilson. Also played on "Pet Sounds".
- Played the opening guitar riff on Kenny Rogers & The First Edition "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)".
- Brought the songwriting talents of Jimmy Webb to the forefront, having hits with what I call his city trilogy: "By The Time I Get To Phoenix", "Wichita Lineman", and "Galveston".
Peter Frampton: Besides being one of the largest selling live albums, "Frampton Comes Alive" also showcased his first four post-Humble Pie studio albums which were mostly missed by the masses.
If you're a fan of instrumental music, I highly recommend his 2006 Grammy-winning "Fingerprints". His 2010 release, "Thank You Mr. Churchill" is also worth a listen.
Paul Carrack: Described by the BBC as "The Man with the Golden Voice", he first gained notoriety as lead singer of Ace when "How Long" reached #3 in 1975.
- After working with Roxy Music, Paul joined Squeeze and sang lead on "Tempted".
- He went on to reach the top 40 four times as a solo artist, led by his #9 "Don't Shed A Tear".
- Meanwhile he teamed with Mike Rutherford from Genesis in his side project Mike + The Mechanics. His vocals grace the top 10 hit "Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground)" and the #1 single "The Living Years".
- Other accomplishments include working with Nick Lowe and his Cowboy Outfit, and Roger Waters as a member of his Bleeding Hearts Band during the 1980s. The "B" side of the Roger Waters 1987 single "Sunset Strip" contains a great live version of "Money" with Paul on lead vocals.
Happy Birthday to all 3 gentlemen.
