January 13, 1973 stands out as one of the worst for me...along with a number of shows from 1970 and late 1972. A number of those shows are pretty laborious for me to get through...but I do listen all the way purely out of interest in any Casey AT40 show.
I have to disagree with early 1974--while January through March or April of '74 wasn't as strong as the rest of the year, overall I find 1974 to be the best year of the first half of the 70's.

Thanks to all of you for your responses which were more tolerant than my thread title!
I am becoming more convinced that it might be more about how our lives were going at the time than the quality of the songs that were on the charts at the time.
Could it, in fact, be all about that? Scary thought.

I really can't think of the worst AT40. However, when the chart methodology changed and the regional rock and R&B hits stopped making the 40, it became a little less interesting. But Casey still kept me engaged. The fun was in the rock, folk, jazz and R&B that made it on the 40 that our local stations didn't play. I found that intriguing. "Sexy Mama," "Shakey Ground" (The Temptations, 1975) and a couple versions of "Amazing Grace" come to mind. There were several instrumentlas as well. Perhaps for me if I had to answer the thread title, I'd have to go with certain episodes of the post-Casey AT40s. Certainly not 1970-1988. And it only concerns the music, not the show itself.

Everybody seems to hate 1974. I like it because it brings back a lot of memories. The year from the seventies I hate the most is 1978. All disco and junk.

wahoo... I'm with you on January, 1973 being one of the low points musically on the chart in the 1970's. The January 20, 1973 AT40 was just played, and while the chart had a great Top 8, the rest of the countdown was weak.... I maybe liked 6 or 7 of the remaining songs.
I am not as familiar with songs on the 1970 and 1971 charts but at least those charts had strong Top 20s. The January, 1973 charts that had songs peaking in the Top 10 that never should have, like "Hi, Hi, Hi" by Wings.
I'm OK with 1974... some very memorable songs along with some clunkers... I enjoy the variety of songs from that year.

Agree with your final sentence: I like the variety from ANY week's countdown!

And I liked Jan 13, 1973. Alot of those songs (not in the Top 10) I bought as 45's including:
Oh Babe, What Would You Say - Hurricane Smith Trouble Man - Marvin Gaye The World Is A Ghetto - War Smoke Gets In Your Eyes - Blue Haze Walk On Water - Neil Diamond
Then I got these songs through album purchases: Why Can't We Live Together - Timmy Thomas I Wanna Be With You - Raspberries You Ought To Be With Me - Al Green Dancing In The Moonlight - King Harvest Papa Was A Rolling Stone - The Temptations
I will say I wasn't a fan of the #40 debut song "Harry Hippie" - Bobby Womack

"Star" by Stealer's Wheel is a great song that deserved a better fate. "Star" did make it to #6 on the AC chart, which is better than "Stuck In The Middle With You" did at #13.

I've been listening to my iPod playlist of the top 100 singles of 1977. I'm only up to #50 and have already pressed the "skip" button at least a dozen-and-a-half times. If ever there was a worse for Top 40 than 1977, I'd like to know what it is!
Well, I suppose 1981 could give it a run for its money....

All disco and junk. tarobe, you and I would disagree on both of those. 1974 to me is the best year of the "early" 70's, and 1978 is one of my favorite years of the 70's overall. An interesting thing to note however--I was too little to remember anything in 1974, so I have no personal memories of that year. My opinions of that year's music (really anything 1975 and earlier) are based almost entirely on the classic songs still in heavy recurrent rotation, and the AT40 shows I've heard since I started listening to the Premiere airings over the last 3-4 years. As for 1978...I was a little kid, but I do have some good personal memories of that year. A good mix of soft rock, classic rock, country and disco on most of those shows. Several songs that remind me of family road trips, etc. Same for 1977 and '79...

Although many seem to not like 1974, for me it was one of my favourite years of the 70's due to my experience.
I was 12 years old that year and there were many songs for young teenagers to love such as "The Night Chicago Died", "Billy Don't Be A Hero", "You Ain't Seem Nothin Yet", "Kung Fu Fighting", "The Locomotion" and "The Streak".
I can't say that these are songs that I really enjoy listening to today, but they were great at the time and those great memories are what stick with me today.

Well said. Me too. I was 11 in 1974 and that year and 1973 are the best years for me.

I don't hate 1974, but it does seem to me to be the weakest year of the decade musically; a lot of novelties and other odd/random hits that don't really hold up. That said, it's generally enjoyable. 1978 isn't bad either, but I kind of get what you're saying; I recently listened to a fall 1978 countdown and was struck by how many of the songs were either similar-sounding disco or boring middle-of-the-road AC. The records that didn't fall into either category provided some much-needed interest.

No matter how subjectively you try to look at it, several personal factors come into play when you judge how good or bad a year is in music. Your age at the time, memories of those years, and the type of music you enjoy are a few examples. Personally, my favorite year was 1971 especially the latter half. Not so crazy about 1979.
