I learned that between March 20 and April 10, 1982 (right at the start of the Cincinnati Reds' worst season ever , but I digress!), on AT40 "Take It Easy On Me" by the Little River Band went from 10 (its peak) to 16 to 36 to 96. What is significant is that the hit that followed, "Leader Of The Band" by Dan Fogelberg, went from 9 (its peak) to 15 to 35 to 95. IOW, "Take It Easy On Me" was exactly one position behind "Leader Of The Band" from that timeframe, near the top and near the bottom of the Top 100! What was happening? Was this a coincidence?

I bumped a thread up from a week or so ago about songs fading fast. Check it out...it might give you a little insight to 1982.
BTW, was that the year the fan fell of the stands at Riverfront? Or was that 1981?

Is that the year the umpire had the heart attack on opening day and died?

Is that the year the umpire had the heart attack on opening day and died? That was 1996 (John McSherry).

Judging from all the weird chart moves (and non-moves) in the early 1980s, I don't think that was entirely a remarkable coincidence. It's unlikely that sales and radio play on both songs dropped precisely in a unified tandem.

The odds of that happening by chance--two songs with those same movements one position apart--would have to be almost astronomical. I have to believe there was human intervention with moves like that, which could probably be said for several chart oddities during 1982 into early '83.

And while not as prevalent, it did happen as early as 1981 as well. The weeks that "Rapture" was 6 and then 1 (and if I remember correctly, Casey made a big deal out of it), "Passion" and "Together" copied each other for two weeks dropping from 33 and 34 to 38 and 39 the week before (conceivable) to 91 and 92 the next week (ain't no way).
