Did Shadoe play both the original and remade Unchained Melody singles when they appeared during their overlapping 6 week top 40 run? Even when the titles were at #17 and #19? I really wish I had been listening at that time!

Yes. I think the week they were really close together he skipped the original and played just the new version. FWIW, on the 1991 year end show they combined both runs for 1 ranking.

Here is some info per my notes:
10-27-90: A medley of different versions of the song are played (by various artists). The original version is not played.
11-3-90: Although the songs are only 2 positions apart, both are played.
11-10-90: The original version is not played. Shadoe gives the movement of the original and teases a story about the song. He says "instead of playing the two songs so close together". However, they were closer last week!

And IIRC that combined ranking placed it just inside the Top 40 of the year (it's the last song played in Hour 5, I believe). 10/13/90 was the week where the second "Melody" debuted, and Shadoe had stories for both of them (so yes, both were played). The 1990 re-recording obviously told the story of this very occurrence being a chart first, while the original had the fact that the Righteous Brothers were not told in advance that their song was even going to be used in Ghost! As Bobby Hatfield relates, he found out when USA Today contacted him for an interview about it.

I thought they held it off because of how late it charted in the year and could have sworn it was 91s I heard it on.

I thought that was cool since, based on its performance on the Airplay chart, it appeared on the year-ender about where the song would have placed had they not stopped printing the original.
